Hi all

Well my old mobile phone died (4years old lol!!) and I decided to get with the programme and buy a iphone 3gs. I like it a lot but.... I can't tether it to my laptop as a modem unless I pay O2 £15 pm - yeah right my last phone did it no probs. So ready around I found something called jailbreaking which allows me to install unoffical apps - one of which will allow me to tether the phone to my laptop without then having to take the o2 bolt-on.

Now the forums I've read seem to indicate this is all pretty safe but given all you guys are serious hackers and wanted by the FBI and interpol , I thought I check with you.

Has anyone got a jailbroken iphone and is it ok?

basically everyone I know with an iphone has jailbroken it. it looks like it works ok on the whole, but getting some apps to run (especially games) can be a pain. oh and whenever an update is released (and you sync your iphone/download the update), it more or less breaks and you have to start over and jailbreak it again. so not exactly unsafe, but just... doesn't work very well sometimes, I guess :)

I had a jailbreaked ipod touch from the beginning and it is safe. I just cant bother to jailbreak my new ipod touch because i only use it for music and movies and not for gaming:P

OK I did it and it worked perfectly (phew) and can now use my Iphone as a 3g modem for my laptop without extra charges - wonderful.

Jailbreaking - its essentially hacking the phones OS to allow non-apple approved apps to be loaded on it. In my case the to use it as a 3g modem - plus I've now customised the themes and menus. Jailbreaking also allows you to load apps that can unlock the phone to use on other networks - not something I needed to do.

Thanks for reassurance Scatter and Nab - needed that extra bit.

I have a Iphone, but i dont have it jail braked? Cause i am not sure if it will break the waranty!

Re - Warranty - already new that so don't worry. It is goes wrong I will just use itunes to restore which erases all jailbreaking - just like a format and install of windows. Or drive over it with my car and claim off the insurance.

Either way the warranty thing isn't a big enough barrier to stop me jailbreaking.

Yeah the waranty is easily surpassed and my dad accidentally drove over my old iPod touch and it still works :D only problem is that the stud from the wheels made it that i get glass in my hand when i use it :P

i might try this at a later occasion, but as i've just bought iPhone i dont want to screw it up even before my tele provider has been chanegd over :P

isnt so and say everything on app store u can think of to get? (except a few exceptions)
and with jailbreak, you can get screensavers, and u can customize your screen. in which way can u customize it?

Apart from what I've mentioned above there are no apps on the iTunes store that enable you to do change your themes and generally personalise your iphone. This is what I've done to mine.

now that's very swish! I've seen a few other's custom themes but none as stylish as that. kinda makes me want an iPhone now :mrgreen:

Few more screen captures. Not sure there is much more summary info you can put on the main springboard - not sure you would want to. However the lock screen has lots of potential.

Main lock screen with Calaender info. There is an app where you can show mail and weather on the lock screen.

hehe. i've jailbroken my iPhone now and played around :D Found IntelliScreen which lets u have things on the locked screen like wheater, rss, email and so on. pretty neat.
