Except from the fact that I suck. Now we got that one out of the way so you guys can't make that joke. I wasn't really sure if should make a thread about it, but maybe you guys got some tips. Lately I haven't been playing much, I don't expect you guys to notice, but here's the reason. The game can't run on my computer. Actually, I got the game installed on two differenct computers (thanks to Steam, yay!). The first one, my own computer. Which is an old, reeking pile of garbage. The other one is my brothers new hot computer. On that computer the game runs like a charm, but for some (not so) obvious reasons I can't use that computer all that much. So I'm stuck with my own computer. I tried downloading the Quantum High FPS config in hopes that it will be playable. But alas, it only worked to prove my point. In battle my FPS drops to about 12 or 15. Sometimes under 10 if there's a lot of shit going on, which is pretty much all the time. Maybe I wrote my cfg wrong when I installed the config, you were suppoused to make some changes depending on your CPU etc? Could someone post a screenshot how their cfg looks like? Buying a new computer wouldn't be an acceptable answer, I wan't a fast solution! ![]() Maybe someone experienced the same thing? Can the FPS drops be explained with a bad computer? It's not actually that old, I could post details about my computer if anyone knows about this stuff. ![]() Cool story Picture related, it's me.

What anti-virus are you using? I had some horrific FPS drops a few months ago when i was using Kaspersky, which disappeared after I switched to AVG. I know theres a few others that steam doesn't particularly like but i can't remember which ones of the top of my head |

-dxlevel 81 in start options if you dont have it already. Makes your game look like shit but gives a major performance boost together with Quantums or mores config. |

Thanks for all the answers. =) *Gathering system specs... with EVEREST Home* Computer Operating System Microsoft Windows Vista Home Edition OS Service Pack Service Pack 2 DirectX 4.09.00.0904 (DirectX 9.0c) Motherboard CPU Type Intel Pentium 4 550, 3400 MHz (17 x 200) Motherboard Name FUJITSU SIEMENS D1826-G Motherboard Chipset Intel Grantsdale i915P System Memory 1024 MB (PC3200 DDR SDRAM) BIOS Type Phoenix (01/28/05) Display Video Adapter NVIDIA GeForce 6800 Series GPU Video Adapter NVIDIA GeForce 6800 Series GPU 3D Accelerator nVIDIA GeForce 6800 PCI-E Series Monitor LG Flatron L1910B (Digital) [19" LCD] (1310100852) Multimedia Audio Adapter Creative SB0350 Audigy 2 ZS Sound Card Storage IDE Controller Intel(R) 82801FB Ultra ATA Storage Controllers - 2652 IDE Controller Intel(R) 82801FB/FBM Ultra ATA Storage Controllers - 266F SCSI/RAID Controller AXZ0NN0J IDE Controller SCSI/RAID Controller Microsoft iSCSI Initiator Partitions C: (NTFS) 238433 MB (179375 MB free) D: (NTFS) 238472 MB (39453 MB free) Total Size 465.7 GB (213.7 GB free) Network Network Adapter ADMtek AN983 10/100Mbps PCI Adapter Network Adapter D-Link AirPlus DWL-G520 Wireless PCI Adapter(rev.B) (192.168.1.73) Modem Smart Link 56K Voice Modem Maybe a little overkill with the info but rather more info than not enough. I'm currently not running any firewall more except Windows built in. Complemented with the Windows Defender and freeware Spybot-SD. I'm pretty sure I've portforwarded the game thoroughly. And also the issue with the cfg. Could anyone upload theirs or a picture of how theirs look? I'm not sure if I am doin' it rite. See the picture for what I mean. You need a new cpu, also make sure that you have dual core disabled because you only have a single core processor. Use ctrl + f to find if you already have the mat_queue_mode line in your config, then change it to: Code:
The config should go into:C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\username\team fortress 2\tf\cfg and make sure the file is renamed to Code:

In which config file should I find this? I got the autoexec that says this (and only this): "exec Quantum.cfg/MainConfig" So I guess that means that that's the config that's currently being used. But since that file doesn't contain info on my binds etc etc, I guess also the file named just "config" also is being used? That one contains the line "mat_queue_mode -1". Is this correct? |

You do definitly do something wrong, I played with a GeForce 5200FX, 512MB ram and a Athlon 2600 and had the same fps as you without using dxlevel 81. ![]() |

Oh yeah, quantums is different to most in that it does that linking. mat_queue_mode -1 just sets how many cores it uses to the default setting, which is what you want.

Remember that over the years system spec required to play tf2 has changed a lot, so you probably wont get more than 10 fps on gf5200 ![]() ![]() |

Gad. I remember the PC I used to play TF2 on when it first came out. It was a 1.8 Ghz Single Core Athlon of some description with a GeForce 4400, which I had to take out cause it didn't support DirectX 9. I then bought a GeForce 7800 but as you can probably ascertain, the PC was still a heaping helping pile of crap, so although it ran the game it was an absolute nightmare. I could only really play as Medic cause whenever I hit an area with more than 3 people, I could only guess what was going on. It was literally a slideshow. So I used to heal people and stand round the corner so I'd have a chance of not dying. Playing any other class was just not going to happen. I suppose it goes without saying that I'm not too computer savvy, but comparing now to back then I'm worlds apart. So my solution was to buy a new PC. ![]() It worked though. ![]() |

Thanks for all the answes folks. It's been helpful even though it hasn't made me able to play the game. ![]() I guess my computer just suffers from chronic hardware issues. Like an overheating GPU and CPU, crazy soundcard and retarded speakers. Constantly übernoisy fan. Etc etc. And a lot of software on it. I haven't been able to sweep (formate my computer with a windows CD - my Vista installdisc was just an upgrade and didn't delete all the old shit from) it completly lately so I guess it's just tired and wants to die. Even though these problems existed for some time I've still been able to play TF2, so I don't really know exactly whats causing the trouble. Guess I'll stop playing until I get a new computer. D: |
