May be your graphics card overheating or having faulty RAM.

does this happen all the time or while playing a game?

I know Warhammer online beta had a problem that would cause that.

Have you tried updating your drivers?

I'd take a vacumcleaner and dust out the case , pay proper attention to the fans.

Without knowing the card and conditions the error occurs we can only give you random suggestions

they say not to do this as it builds up static that can damage stuff. buy a can of compressed air (from amazon or something) and get the dust off that way.

This is not the 80's and not 500.000 euro equipment. Just use a vacume cleaner 8)

Does warranty often cover static electricity damage?

Important information brought to you by the confederation of overpriced compressed air manufacturers

Just switch off your PC first, you'll be fine.

They wouldn't even know if it were static electric which broke the card or not. It's very difficult to figure that out. For the manufacture its just a case of "ye, its broken, replace it".
