Hiya. My old pc which i made into a server for bots, files and more went to hell the other month. It looks like the motherboard has gone to hell, and as they aint making that kind any more i would need a new server. I could replace this machine and make it a server, but it is pretty new and i think it would be money wasted. So what i was wondering about if you guys knew about a nice server system i could use, just like another computer. I found something called Acer REVOlution that is so small that u can hang it behind ur pc screen. Sounded interesting, but as i cant buy it any more from the site i found it on earlier, i dont know what happened with it. All help would be appreciated ![]() |

We will help you with suggestions if you allow us to store stuff on your server (mostly porn, involving midgets and a jacuzzi), under a folder named "Favourites - must keep!". |

Isn't that Acer thingy more a HTPC than a "simple" server? So that do you need at all? A HTPC? Just a NAS? ![]() |

I really don't have a clue, I think it's a network firewall? I think it lets you use old hardware and run a router through it.![]() I guess you could stick a few hard drives in it and use it as a fileserver as well? I don't have a clue ;D |

Smoothwall - A secure operating system that converts a redundant PC into a firewall and VPN gateway. I don't think that is what he is after. Take a look at qnap http://www.qnap.com |

So can you create a NAS server with old hardware? The only downside being it would be bulkier than the commercial setups? Seems so http://freenas.org/freenas or http://www.openfiler.com/, I might try and do it with my bits and bobs. |

Why shouldn't this possible? That little boxes are still PC hardware with software on it. ![]() An old PC will use more power... which can care if you have to pay the bill yourself. |
