Has no REAL life! (1120)
I'm looking for an app capable of recording both the desktop and in-game. Also it has to keep recording when tabbing up to fullscreen etc. Any recommendations?

Tried Fraps, Camtasia and that other popular one with "cam" in it.

http://www.virtualdub.org/

A bit heavy around the settings till you get used to it but otherwise it's awesome.

I use Fraps cause I'm downright lazy.

If you're downright lazy too, use Fraps.

Used FRAPS today for the first time - really easy to use. Only thing I didn't like was a 7 minute video came in at 450mb   then had to re-encode it down to 12md for what I needed.

Fraps doesn't record desktop. Well, sometimes it does, but only when something else bugs out.

I'll have a look at Virtual Dub

fraps also captures using a fraps uncompressed codec -which is also why you get such a big file (audio is uncompressed too) - im sure you can find some freeware to encode, i use tmpeg to encode, but you do have to pay.

virtual dub can encode

Get:

http://mirror01.x264.nl/x264/?dir=./revision1376

http://www.rarewares.org/mp3-lame-bundl ... me-current I guess 3.98.2 (for adding compressed audio to h264)

http://sourceforge.net/projects/ffdshow/

Then just use virtualdub to encode to the h264 codec

Yeah, if I'm making video's that require me to take a lot of footage that gets edited later, I'm looking at some major hard drive space needed.

For example, I'm making a 4 minute video right now, and the combined footage I have taken so far comes to 59.4 GB.

I shit you not.

im capturing hours of video footage at work and have several big high capacity hdd's but even then, they do get stuffed pretty quickly.

Vdub is a great bit of software for encoding for pretty much anything unless its hardware specific (like for some sony games we need special software from them to encode for their consoles), but it's not as user friendly as some free encoding apps you may find. Thou there are plenty of tutorials and forums you can look at.

Illiterate (1)
Screen Recorder - Demo Creator.
More appropriate for making software tutorials, Website demos and instructional videos for Web sharing.

But it can't be used for recording games.
