Well, If I'd were to make a top 5 list, it would probably look a lot like this:

5. Final Fantasy IX Although I've only beaten 3/4 of it and just started a new game, I find it to be absolutely amazing. Vivi <3

4. S.T.A.L.K.E.R My oh my this game was awesome. Certainly not one of those games that embrace the player, this was a grower on me. It was really wierd actually playing a challenging FPS. Haven't done that since Rainbow Six(the first one). Love the setting and want to visit Pripyat and the plant itself some day.

3. Silent Hill 2 Psycholgical horror at its best. I've never been scared so shitless by a game before. Pyramid Head is the scariest fucking thing ever.

2. Half-Life 2 Think I made myself pretty clear in that thread of mine.

1. Metal Gear Solid 10 years old, but it's still the best game I've ever played. There's so much stuff to pick from here that it could've easily become a short novel.
But this is the perfect story in a video game as far as I'm concerned. Plot twist after plot twist, drama to the last second and terrific voice acting. Besides, Ninja is my all time favourite video game char. Too bad you only got to play him in VR Missions.

Anyways, that's my list. Please try to elaborate just a little bit as to why you've picked the games you have.

And remember that spoiler warning and hidden text if you must.

5. Syberia - I've played many advesntures, starting with Maniac Mansion, Leisure Suite Larry and Day of the Tentacle, but this one struck a cord with the child in me. So I ended up looking for mammoths myself.
5. Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time - Great story, beautiful design, epic gameplay. Too bad the combat was a bit too repetitive.
5. Portal - Need I comment on it?
5. World of Warcraft - Despite it's flaws in terms of game mechanics it's a jewel of a game. The questing, the lore, the detailed world..just awesome. Then again I play on an RP Server. :)
1. Baldur's Gate series - By far the most enjoyable, jaw-dropping, heart-melting gameplay hours I have ever experienced in any game. I still play it and I probably always will. I have never felt greater satisfaction when beating an encounter (if you've played it, think of Kangaxx) and never been so drown in a storyline and world. Irenicus, Lilarcor, Noober, Volo, Elminster, Jan Jansen, the phylosophy behind the books about the world, the balance of powers, the characters, the graphical design, the quests, how every rock in the game has a story, the stats and D&D rules...so many things make this game amazing.

I always like these topics, but I never know where to start. My favourite game, ever, isn't in recent years. It was on the sega, so I won't include that.

- Unreal Tournament 99 - Put over 1,000 hours into it in about 9 months
- Timesplitters 2 + 3 - If the games were on PC, they'd be even better than TF2
- Team Fortress 2 - You all know how cool this game is
- GRID - I just loved it. Was a challenge at first, using the keyboard
- Final Fantasy X - Fully completed it several times over now
- Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas - WAY better than GTA IV. Bah, GTA's ruined for me now
- Worms 2 - Is this game too old to count? Either way, I demand a remake
- Command and Conquer Red Alert 2 + 3 - Both amazing games. Everyone seems to hate RA3 because of the graphics
- Carmageddon - Never did get very far in it. A HD version would be amazing
- Burnout Paradise - I loved it so much, I'm tempted to get it again on PC
- AudioSurf - Great to use up some free time
- Need for Speed Underground 2 - Another one of my favourite series ruined, because of Pro Street and Undercover
- Forza Motorsport 2 - Really good racing game. Only reason I'm interested in the 360 any more

I would include Left 4 Dead, I suppose. But I don't really like Versus, and it doesn't look like Valve are releasing new co-op campaigns with the update. Because of that reason, I won't include it.

Perhaps, i can add F.E.A.R. to my toplist. Absolutely amazing atmosphere (i was so fuckin scared to play during the night and when playing was wishing that the scary part to be finished), nice plot and some nice action.. prolly, my second (right after Half Life 2) favourite fps of all time. And no, i do not agree that the add-ons sucks. I consider Perseus Mandate as a very good expansion, which is even more scary than the main story. If any fps-fan haven't played it already, i recommend it.

Gothic I and II - best Role Play Games ever. Seriously, you have to play these games, they are totally worth it.

Crysis - A very nice story (this mix of science fiction and mystery is great), awesome graphics, innovative ideas in the FPS genre (like the functions of the nanosuit).

The Half Life series - Undoubtedly great.

Warcraft 3 (incl. The Frozen Throne) - great gameplay, best game story ever

and, although it's really old: Monkey Island, especially the first two parts of the series - I have yet to find a funnier game.

To those, who listed World of Warcraft: Are you kidding me? WoW is by far the worst and most overrated game ever. I have played it for quite a while and it just sucks. Here's why:
WoW actually starts great. It starts in a world with a giant background story, it has quite nice graphics and it's really fun in the beginning. But once you reached the maximum level, whether it's 60, 70 or 80 it begins to get boring. The only thing that's important then, is to be in a good guild, so you have the chance the to get items from the high-level instances. Because that's what playing at the maximum level in WoW is all about: Getting better items. You have to spend hours in those instances, fighting tons of useless monsters until you reach the respective boss, just to die time and time again until this boss is finally brought down. Still, this is no guarantee that you get your respective items. You need to do this several times a week, until you have enough DKP to buy those items. And once you have completed your set, Blizzard releases a new patch with even stronger enemies, dropping even better items. So it all starts again and this is mainly, how Blizzard earns the money. With releasing the same content over and over again. Sorry, but for me WoW isn't worth the 13 EURO per month.

Unlike most players, I actually appreciate RPG. As in roleplay. You know, the actual thing. And except for muds (like Achaea:Dreams of Divine Lands) WoW is by far the best place to roleplay in a mmo. As I've said the detailed world, the quests, the lore, the items, it's great. Sure, when discussing mechanics we're talking about a different game.
The second point you're fighting against should just make you want to stop playing mmos alltogether. At least fantasy based ones. DKP didn't come with WoW (like many other things it's attributed) but with Everquest (which is why it's called Dragon Kill Points). It has since been used in all mmos to control loot distribution. If you don't like any of it's variations (zero sum and blabla) then find a guild that has a loot council..or learn to live with it. :)
The raiding part in WoW is only fun as long as you do it with friends and fun people. Simple rule that pretty much applies to all forms of social entertainment.
If you do it for the loot, it's bad.
If you do it for the fun on Vent, it's good.
If you do it for the game challange, it's gonna be good only for a little while.

Well, I played on a simple PvP-server and it sucked. At first, I was in a guild, which was way too ambitious to raid the high level instances. And I'm not the person for spending four or more evenings per week in an instance for several hours, especially when people start yelling at the team, when it can't take a boss down. I see games strictly as something that is supposed to make fun and as soon as fun turns into stress, I stop playing. Besides, it's not only the time you spend in instances. You have to gather herbs for your potions etc. However, the worst thing was that there was very little you could do on PvP-servers other than raiding. PvP in the battefields? Not without a guild or a skilled PvP team, because the chances were high that you just got asskicked by some other clan. Solving quests? There are very very very few available for the maximum level. Starting a second character? Maybe, but that is only a temporary solution. So in the end, the only thing you can do is going into instances and those instances need you to be ambitious.

I never tried the RPG servers, maybe I missed something, but well.. I don't see the point, why I should spend 13 EURO per month into a game that is repetitive all over.

Another aspect concerning the game story is: Warcraft I, II and III had an awesome background story. So many heroes, so many villains, so many places, so many legends. And Blizzard messed it all up, by just putting all those villains (Illidan, the Burning Legion, Nefarius etc.) into instances, thus ruining any hope for another sequel of the Warcraft series.

Time Before PC = SNES/MegaDrive/SNES/Sega Saturn/PS2/Xbox

Too far back to remember which games were my fav and to be honest probably doesn't count as recent anyway.

So recent starts from when I moved into PC gaming which was a round 1999. Favourite games would be:

Half Life - the first actual 'game' I played on my PC and spent weeks playing it and was blown away by its size and graphics. At the time there wasn't anything else that could match it so I was a bit dissappointed when I finished it and found I'd played the best and everything else was below it, that was until I came across....

Counterstrike - Must of been around early 2000 - beta 5ish I think when I installed a mod and joined a server. That was it and I was hooked for the next 5 years. The whole concept of 'online' play was still really new, yet alone online team play. Plus actually getting it to work and run over a 56k modem was a feat worthy on celebration. As it was a mod and PC's were still a luxury for most it meant the croud was mostly older and I had some of the best laughs and games.

TF2 although better can't beat the early days of Counterstrike for me as it really was groundbreaking.
