Hey :4
So, I want to put a new hard drive on my computer, from your experience, wich is better/flexible? An external one or a "normal" one? Size should be around 1 -1.5 TB
Any sugetion? price... should be low, a max of 150 e
Specs: INTEL D975XBX2 (motherboard)
Intel Core 2 CPU 6600 2.40 GHz
4 gb ram
win 7 64 bit

I heard the Western Digital Caviar Black drives were good, you can get a 1TB one of them for ~£70, so I guess it would be in your price range for euros (unless you get ripped off massively :P).

I'm also thinking of getting a new hard disk and I've decided to go with an internal basically because I have two free slots and it won't clutter my desk further nor take up another power slot or usb. All thanks to Howard

depends what you want to do with it; is it for running the os and software, or just data storage.
do u want to be able to store backups on it? because i use a couple of externals to hold backups in case of fire; in addition to some just for movies/music that i can quickly flush down the toilet if the fuzz come round to arrest me for illegal downloading ^^

If you don't need to transport the data then there's no point getting a external drive - they are slower for transfering data to.

You also don't need a high performance internal drive if it just for storage. Just get one that's big, cheap and from a good company.

Don't buy an external one. Besides what Jedi said, they have a habbit of cracking fast.

If your current hdd is also about 1-1.5tb you should look into setting them up in RAID-0 for the extra speed. I'm too lazy to look up if your motherboard has hardware support, if it doesn't, software raid should be ok. Not as good, but still a nice speed boost.**

Your options are, basically:
Western Digital for better power consumption (green versions)
Seagate for better (and by better I mean so small you would never notice) speeds
..and maybe a HITACHI with which I have no experience so dunno anything about.

My personal suggestion is to go with WDC. They make badass drives: quiet and reliable. (emag linky)

**if you're gonna go for raid-0 there's a bit more you should look into when choosing a drive, like compatible speeds so you don't have one slowing down the system. Also, how old is your current one and when did you check it's health last time? :P

I also have a WD external so if you do decide to get an external WD is the answer. I have the MyBook Pro and I've had no problems at all with it. It even fits in my handbag :ugly:
