Post subject: | Finally! |
So after much waiting, I got my DSLR today at Jessops in Glasgow. And not particularly being one for patience, I jumped into the nearest Costa coffee and put it all together. I was surprised to find that the battery had a charge in it, albeit not much, so I went about taking some first time snaps around the City Centre. Obviously being a novice, I've got a lot to learn, but it's always been my motto that you learn by doing. And do I did! The biggest problems with these pictures is over exposure but it's mainly down to the fact that I decided to brave manual mode straight from the get go, as opposed to sticking it on automatic and letting it do all the work. Anyway, I'll stick up a few pictures so you can all scoff at how amateurish they look. ![]() I'll be getting better soon though, cause I'm a damned fast learner. ![]() |

Yeah he was juggling flaming batons before but I missed it, and the people I was with were bloody impatient and wouldn't wait for me.Cause if not one might wonder why the hell his shirt isn't on... It also explains why the palms of his hands were blackened. Even still, seeing a guy with his shirt off walking around Glasgow isn't exactly a rare sight. It lets everybody know not to mess with you. If you're ever in Glasgow and you see a fully naked guy in the street, run in the opposite direction cause he'll fuck you up big time. |

What camera is it you have? What focus points are you using? Try and use the centre one instead of all of them. This way you can focus on what you want to be in focus and stand out, as opposed to getting everything in focus. You said in your original post about over exposing. What metering are you using? Try Spot Metering, if your camera has this. If not, it will have Partial Metering. With Spot Metering, it will expose for the centre of the image, and Partial Metering does this, plus a bit more around the centre. When using this, aim the camera at what you want exposed the most and go from there. If the sky is always blown out, use exposure compensation. Or choose a day to go out where it's a blue sky instead of a cloudy one. ![]() The one with the guy juggling knives, a good subject, but it would of worked better zoomed in (or got closer?) and try a different view of angle. Seeing everyone around him distracts you from the subject, so try and have subjects like that fill up the image. It really makes them stand out. Also, I notice a fair bit of camera shake on the photos. What settings were you using? Try and use a fast shutter to help eliminate this. Or get a monopod. |

Karl. Relax man. I'd only just taken the thing out of the box and didn't know what I was doing. I never changed any settings. |

Its run down, negected and forgotton - even though it once was important. It leads you to draw many comparisons with life/the world we are living in at the moment i.e the poor state of manufacturing in the UK - steel works closing in Tyneside etc. Could go deeper but hopefully you get my drift. Also - How you have framed the picture adds to that feeling both in the darkness of the framing and that it is made up of weeds/rubble. Thats what a picture like this, taken well, can do. The picture after all is just a old door, but take some time to look and it becomes a bit more. |

Appreciate your input mate. It's nice to know how these pictures are percieved. ![]() The building it's attached to, which was an old ICI Explosives factory, burned down a few years ago. It's really an interesting place to walk around and check out. Some of it was also kinda creepy since I was on my own. |

Sorry about that. I don't frequent the forums as often as you lot, so I don't always see the posts. Thought I'd check out out and saw it was about photography, so I thought I'd give a little help. If you do need a hand, let me know.
