so...yesterday my video card start make some noises (my guess is that fan touch "something" inside) so I took my copmuter, open it..and start cleaning: proc fan, power source, and video card, from all I think I get enough soil to put a flower to grow. Result, a lot more silence now, but video card still make some noise and beside I can barely get 30-40 fps (from a amost constant 100-80) in tf2. Not only low fps but is also shuttering (if is the right word).Last two weeks my screens (2) go black, no image (only sound and after few seconds from 3-6 the come back in normal way. After that my windows pop up a baloon and tell me that my nvidia driver has failed. The driver was installed months ago.. so, did I fucked something by opening my hardware or my video card just decide to put me to some spend some money?

I cecked drivers, all my hardware works fine according to windows...reinstal windows even and the problem still here.
Help

ah, and my sistem: Win 7, DuoCore 6600, 4 gb ram and video GeForce 7950GT

The only way of suddenly constantly decreased FPS in your case I can think of is overheating and therefore automatic underclocking of the hardware.

Check your temperatures of your GPU and CPU under load. Everest, GPU-Z, Speedfan and other tools allow that. Additionally those tools allow to monitor your MHZ and other specifics of your processors. Check if they change under load.

From a few days back i have an issue were i keep getting FPS drops when a new round has started. I'll have to reboot to fix it. Sometimes it just works fine. I've also had 2 driver crashes while using the steam overlay...

Oh btw BAM, you might want to re-insert the card into the slot or in a different slot if possible.

This kind of problems are the worst and the most annoying :( . At least for me when my video card died i saw vertical blue lines all over the screen and windows wouldn't load anymore. How long do you have the card ? ( the hardware have a average life in most cases the warranty time ) my died after 2 years of use. What video driver version are you using that "nvidia driver has failed" is sometimes driver related but after after reading more carefully i remember that :" my screens (2) go black, no image (only sound and after few seconds from 3-6 the come back in normal way. After that my windows pop up a baloon and tell me that my nvidia driver has failed." these are thing that were happening to me too months before it died completely

197.57 that's the latest driver right? Have you tried a older driver maybe the 196.21?

Well Bam check if the clock speeds under load match what your card should deliver. If its a standard model a quick google will give you the numbers.

IF these shots are made under load (tiny load...eh? 120mb memory usage is not much) then the temperatures are okay.

66 C on 0% load is pretty high :| Although, some cards do run that hot

Oh right those are idle numbers. Yes indeed then 66°C is allready high. But that could be a normal temperature for this gpu. I dont know.

Most video cards idle around 50°C (+-10) and throttle themself down above 100°C (again +-10).

Yeah mines like 50 idle, 38 ambient and 80-85 load, those new GTX480s get to 100 but that's ridiculous, don't know of many cards which do that.

My old 8800GT SLI had 124°C peak temperature. If I imagine that one of those cards needed more power than my whole pc now...uff! I feel like all. Bunch of faggots now :?

ok...i decide to fuck it and buy a new card...
after some research if come to this two:
http://www.amd.com/us/products/desktop/ ... rview.aspx
and
http://www.nvidia.co.uk/object/geforce_gtx_260_uk.html

...problems: I don't really trust ati (I have some bad memories with it) and nvidia is huge (as size) but I think I can manage to make room...I think

and for those less noobs than me maybe they can tell me if my mb is ok for any of those cards

Be sure to have a good PSU with at least 500W if you want to buy any of those cards. :) The 5770 has directx 11 and from what i can see it's cheaper then the Gtx 260 and i think performance wise there the same in the end it comes down to what you like ati or nvidia :) .If you go for the GTX 260 be sure to have enough space ( it has 26 cm ) i had a surprise and i ended up cutting in my case to make room. :ugly: And you should consider upgrading your CPU later on i think it's going to bottleneck your new video card.
If you motherboard has PCI Express 2.0 x16 then it's ok.

Both will work with your mainboard. Both cards will use 150 to 200 watts of power. So check what your other components need. A cheap 600 watts PSU may fail while a quality 300 watts rated PSU will succeed. Who knows :-)

And DON'T buy the reference design (as pictured) from those cards. There are plenty of custom designs with better and more silent cooling, less power draw etc.
