Post subject:  Help Me Out Here

Can anybody tell me what manner of beast this is? I found it floating down the harbour, and can't for the life of me figure out what the hell it is. I stood there staring at it for ages, and at first I was convinced it was a seagull. But on closer inspection, I'm really not sure. I was pretty close to climbing down there and flipping it over, but obviously that would be something of an error of judgement. I'd hate to have drowned cause I was turning over a dead animal. That's a very lame way to go.

Anyway. Somebody tell me what this is.

Using some extensive CSI style enhancing, I've enlarged and zoomed and took some DNA. So hopefully it will clear it up. Ditch is convinced it's a loon...

Yeah, we've come to the conclusion that it's a Guillemot. We could be wrong of course, but that's certainly the breed we've agreed on for now.

If anybody can shed some light on what it actually is though, then that would be fine. :)

Post subject:  Re: Help Me Out Here

it must be a sort of seagul...

since he has an all white puinguin like belly and a yellow beak in the same shape
if only we'd known what he looked like from behind we could figure it out

i suggest you go back and turn it round

I missed this thread, but I'm glad I stumbled across it as I can tell you what it is because I'm quite knowledgeable when it comes to wildlife.

Due to spending 5 years working for the RSPCA and WWF, I have come across many species of animal which some seem strange, weird and outright daft. This is not the first time I have seen a photo of what appears to be a bird in the lake, on its back looking what we could say is dead.

I have spent 2 and a half hours studying this photo at different angles and my conclusion, which I think is slightly over professional (I didn't want to come across to big headed with my experience here, but I think I may have to), is that this create is not a bird, but in fact a donkey.

Not necessarily. The guys a photographer, so it's perfectly feasible that he would work with wildlife.

Judging from the photo's he posts up here, he still does. :P

Its a Common Murre, or Common Guillemot the difference is only the name really... it also looks like its already got its winter coat as it seems lighter feathers on the underside of its head have come in.
