Go on! Look at it!
yes, look at it...and see how christianity saved us during the dark ages. sure, history proved they're filthy, filthy rich, bloodthirsty and a bunch of others.. but back then, their support for arts was pretty much what kept us from going back to the stoneage.
Heh. Was this before or after the Pope put Galileo under house arrest for the remainder of his life, cause he said the Earth rotated round the Sun as opposed to it rotating round Earth? Galileo being one of the most important scientific minds in history of course. And we all know how big a fan of science the Catholic church were.
Of course they supported the arts. They wanted to depict their white Jesus all over the place, cause how do you reach out and touch the hearts of the illiterate with a book? A better idea is to paint him in a heavenly light. I've seen plenty of these paintings. Hell, just walking around the National Art Gallery in London is enough to make even the staunchest Atheist feel uneasy. There is a certain power to these depictions, but that's the whole point.
All I'm saying is, for everything they might have done to push us forward, they were doing equal amounts to hold us back.
Saying that however, I can still appreciate what they done for the Arts, and don't deny that some of the most fantastic works have been born of their collaborations with renowned historical figures.
