I'll use this topic to throw stuff in such as talks and docu's i find interesting. Feel free to add stuff which is vaguely related to the same kind of topics. Chris Anderson: How web video powers global innovation Quote: TED's Chris Anderson says the rise of web video is driving a worldwide phenomenon he calls Crowd Accelerated Innovation -- a self-fueling cycle of learning that could be as significant as the invention of print. But to tap into its power, organizations will need to embrace radical openness. And for TED, it means the dawn of a whole new chapter ...

A stroke of Insight Quote: Jill Bolte Taylor got a research opportunity few brain scientists would wish for: She had a massive stroke, and watched as her brain functions -- motion, speech, self-awareness -- shut down one by one. An astonishing story. http://www.ted.com/talks/lang/eng/jill_ ... sight.htmlThe Danger of a Single Story Quote: Our lives, our cultures, are composed of many overlapping stories. Novelist Chimamanda Adichie tells the story of how she found her authentic cultural voice -- and warns that if we hear only a single story about another person or country, we risk a critical misunderstanding. http://www.ted.com/talks/lang/eng/chima ... story.htmlWhy are we happy? Quote: Dan Gilbert, author of Stumbling on Happiness, challenges the idea that we’ll be miserable if we don’t get what we want. Our "psychological immune system" lets us feel truly happy even when things don’t go as planned. http://www.ted.com/talks/lang/eng/dan_g ... happy.html

Michael Shermer on strange beliefs Quote: Why do people see the Virgin Mary on a cheese sandwich or hear demonic lyrics in "Stairway to Heaven"? Using video and music, skeptic Michael Shermer shows how we convince ourselves to believe -- and overlook the facts.

Matt Ridley: When ideas have sex Quote: At TEDGlobal 2010, author Matt Ridley shows how, throughout history, the engine of human progress has been the meeting and mating of ideas to make new ideas. It's not important how clever individuals are, he says; what really matters is how smart the collective brain is.

Bangkok Girl is a documentary mostly following one girl, Pla, and her struggle against the sex trade. Its not a massively in depth in fact its a little light on the surface its not even that revelatory (to me anyway) oh yeah and the narrator is a dick, however it tells Pla's story well and helps hit home. Due to the subject matter I wouldn't advise watching this if you are easily upset highly empathetic. |

Derren Brown: The System Quote: The System, a Channel 4 special in which Brown shared his 100 percent guaranteed method for winning on the horses.
http://topdocumentaryfilms.com/derren-brown-the-system/
The show was based around the idea that a system could be developed to guarantee a winner of horse races. Cameras followed a member of the public, Khadisha, as Brown anonymously sent her correct predictions of five races in a row, before encouraging her to place as much money as she could on the sixth race. To demonstrate the system to the viewer, Brown tossed a coin showing ten heads in a row to prove it was not impossible, just highly improbable. After Brown had placed a bet of £4,000 of Khadisha’s money on a horse in the final race, he explained that The System did not really exist. Brown expressed the opinion that the principle behind The System (essentially confirmation bias or survivorship bias) is what is behind belief in spiritualism or homeopathic and alternative medicine. |

The start of The System was nice, but as they revealed the obviously cheated coin toss the show went downhill. Not only did they took forever to explain their simple sytem ( predictable with all the photos shown ), but they didnt reveal the really interesting trick, where he made the 4 sports persons pick the specific photos. Kinda disappointed overall. edit: who changed all our avas, lol |

The bottom idea is not how the tricks are done, it's how people make themselves believe certain things because the highly improbable happens to them.
