Hi Thank you for making me a builder status.
I only started playing minecraft about a week ago. I have been sick with a bad flu and was surfing the web for dosgames when someone suggested I get on minecraft, now I am totally adddicted. However, today is my last sick day and will be back at work full time.
My previous game addictions have been on Diablo and Diablo II, Guild Wars, Gunbound and Fable. I also have an obsession with dos games!
And one more thing, I am in the process of making a retro style computer game (murder mystery adventure point and click).
I am no doubt one of the biggest nerds on here.. so dont be shy! lets have fun building things!

I always hated those old PC side scrollers.

Jazz Jackrabbit always struck me as a broke ass Sonic the Hedgehog.

I hear that. PC games didn't start until the mid 90's as far as I am concerned.

And hey new girl :18

Please do list them! those disks must be worth a fortune now! especially floppy disks.

I practically learned to read and write on the Sierra King's Quest and Space Quest games.
I have managed to make up quite a good collection of the old games onto a CD including Dos Box.

Hocus Pocus
Cosmo's Cosmic Adventure
Alley Cat
Street Rod
Dragon Sphere
Adventures of Hugo
Last Half of Darkness
Captain Comic
Prince of Persia
Xargon

Also, has anyone played the following games by Yatzhee? '5 Days a Stranger' and the rest of the series?
The game I am attempting to make is in the same AGS that he used for this one.
My themes/plot are based on the agatha Christie style Sierra 'Laura Bow' series and the amityville horror movie.
Does anyone have experience or thoughts on this?

The Necromancer (4970)
I'm not so much about old DOS games - I'm all about console emulation, since I never owned any consoles apart from a SNES and currently an NDS. =)

Sporting emulators for 26 different systems with small game collections for all of them. ^^

Me too, but I went and actually bought the consoles  Gee, how my girlfriend loved that :?

TBH though, nostalgia about games is ridiculous. Games have obviously gotten better and better over the years and clinging to the belief that older games are better simply because your first memories of gaming are tied them is just silly. I prove this to myself every few years like when I got hold of a Spectrum emulator about 8 years ago and played all the games I loved as a kid. They were just crap. Shame, but those rose-tinted glasses do just get in the way in the end. Time to embrace the new, people...

The Necromancer (4970)
It depends. There are games we liked as kids BUT there are also timeless classics I still enjoy. They are few of these far and between though. This is also why I keep my rom collections small and filled with the games I actually like.

I dunno. Super Mario World on the SNES is still pretty awesome.

But I also attempted to make an old style PC game to essentially ape those old games, but I didn't have the patience to pull it off. My game was going to be called;

I Have No Asshole, and I Must Fart.

I used to love playing Bruce Lee on the Spectrum and I agree with Howard; darn those rose-tinted glasses because I too got hold of a Spectrum emulater and I was highly disappointed

But there are still some classics that I still have in my possesion and that's the Game&Watch handhelds. I still have lots of fun playing those. Oh and you can't beat a bit of classic Zelda :26

I agree - I am playing it this morning! :4

But, its a question of scales. While I still like plenty of the catalogues of the SNES, Megadrive and so on, can they really stand up to today's games and would they still stand up had we not played them previously and still held cherished memories of them? I don't think so. Sure there are exceptions - those games that were just so startlingly good and innovative (the key here I think) that they still contain a flash of genius now, but they are very rare indeed (though for my money the N64 holds more gems than any other system, mostly thanks to Rare, as was).

I dunno - its kind of a pointless argument as its a fairly subjective issue. You cannot effectively measure the enjoyment of someone else against your own.
