See, I'm torn now. As much as I disapprove Valve's latest decisions about their games (TF2, Half Life 2 episodes, this) I'll still buy HL2ep3 (maybe Portal 2) when it finally comes out. Valve are like a band: they can be complete asshats but if you like the music they play you'll still want to listen to it regardless. |

Since I heard about valve was working on a dota/moba-game I was a bit excited about what Valve would do for the rather new genre since I enjoyed DotA for a bit, but League of Legends even more. Then I read about it in Game Informer's detailed article. Afterwards disappointment overcame me :( To sum it up it's Valve copy the DotA-game as it is, heroes, items, map. The whole she-bang! Without adding or changing anything game-play-wise. I was hoping for Valve to come up with at least something new to the genre that hasn't been seen in any other game in the genre. The effort from Valve's side has instead been laid on the "ancillary" features that will be in the game. Such as a coach system which allows more experienced players to coach new players and help them climb the very steep learning curve and interactive guides. Quotes from the article like Quote: The bulk of innovation in Dota 2, however, is ancillary to the gameplay itself.
and
Quote: Ultimately, two things will make Dota 2 stand out: the coaching system and interactive guides.
makes me disappointed as the few games in the genre out there is already similar enough (excluding Demi God) and I was hoping that someone as big as Valve would have brought some interesting ideas and innovations to the game-play itself. From the standpoint of someone new to the genre I think it's going to be a great game with all the ancillary stuff in there to make it more friendly to the new players and also the graphics which will include "true cloth simulation" :D |

Hoping they just ripped dota to be able to transfer the dota playerbase to DotA 2 flawlessly. Hopefully that means they might try something new and interesting with the genre with the release of DotA 3. Thought that will be quite a while :( |

Basically they are doing it because they saw HoN and LoL do it, realised they could win the mass players by employing Icefrog, who idolise him as though he is the messiah. They will make money - but if it isnt a pixel for pixel copy the dota hardcore fans will still rage. They wouldn't dare touch how the game plays chad, cos that would remove the point of publicly hiring Icefrog. HoN/LoL differ slightly and are reviled by the fanboys because of the differences. oh and Quote: AI bots will take over for disconnected players, and will be available to play against in unranked training matches as well. However, don't get your hopes up for a full-fledged single-player game, though. Johnson says, "Our goal with the AI is just that their experience isn't destroyed just because one person couldn't finish the game
thats quite a bad move imho. bots will be feed junkies to any good players. I wonder if they will have dedicated servers for it like HoN or if it will be p2p like wc3.

I fear it is the truth. They will make money - but if it isnt a pixel for pixel copy the dota hardcore fans will still rage.
