Post subject: | Xesdra's Noob Guide to Moderating! |
Due to the latest crisis with the moderating on our server, I have decided to write a guide on how to be a nice, effective moderator/administrator! Part 1: Earning your Membership! Sooner or later on this server, you will notice that your name has turned light green. Congratulations! This marks the start of your climb up the ladder of ranks, and is the first moderation class. With this rank comes the fabled Copy & Paste, Ellipsoid and the legendary cuboid. However, if you wish to take a break from building and wish to catch griefers and wrongdoers, you can also use some other commands you have unlocked, namely the Kicking and Patrol commands. Patrolling (/patrol) Usage: /patrol The patrol command is used to cycle through the lower ranked players on the server, teleporting you to each and every one of them to search for griefers. This is a useful tool to save time from typing /teleport (name) for every single player. Kicking (/kick) Usage: /kick (name) (reason) This is the first serious tool you can use, as it's use forcibly ejects players from the server. This is recommended for use sparingly, and ONLY if they do not comply with warnings. Remember to ALWAYS tell them to stop, before turning to this command. Also remember to specify a reason for the kick, for future purposes (A criminal record, if you will). Try to solve problems peacefully and without force, kicking everyone won't work. Abuse of this command will also land you a permanent demotion. PROTIP: If you've solved a problem without kicks, you have achieved maximum success! Part 2: Moving up to Veteran! If you've stayed dedicated to the server long enough, you will notice your name has become darker in colour, to a darker green. This means that you have progressed another rank to Veteran! This rank has more features, including a higher limit for draw commands. However, with a higher rank comes a higher responsibility. You have also unlocked new moderation commands, including the Hide, Mute, Freeze and the almighty Ban Hammer. Hiding (/hide) Usage: /hide This command is used to make yourself invisible to lower ranked players (Higher/Equal ranks can still see you as normal). This renders you unable to be teleported or PMed from lower ranked players and also broadcasts a fake disconnect message. This command should be used while patrolling, as a person is most likely not to grief if they know an admin is watching them. It is advised that you unhide when checking someone's work or builds, as they might think you are neglecting them by not being there and it also blows your cover. You can unhide by typing "/unhide". Hiding and editing blocks around people to spook them out is NOT acceptable and is an abuse of the command. Muting (/mute) Usage: /mute (name) (amount of seconds) This command intercepts any chat commands sent to the server from a certain player for a specific amount of time. This command is ONLY for people who abuse the chat system. A minor cuss or swear to try and get a griefer away will be tolerated, and does not deserve a mute. Muting should not be used lightly as there is no specific unmute command (But typing "/mute (name) 1" will replace the current mute with a 1 second one). This command should not be used often, as it can prevent people from reporting swearers. A continued cusser is probably a griefer/troll and is more warranted with a kick than a mute as we don't want their type here. Freezing (/freeze) Usage: /freeze (name) This is one of the most useful tools of the moderator's arsenal. It causes the target player to be frozen and unable to move or edit blocks. This can provide time to ascertain whether it is a serious griefer, or just someone who doesn't know what to do. It can also be used to stop Speed Grifers (People who use the WoM client Speed hack to fly around and grief). This command can be a slight backfire sometimes as people might think their client is frozen and try to reconnect, undoing the freeze and setting them free. Try to use this command more than you do kicks and mutes, as it does not cause lasting damage and allows for negotiation. You can unfreeze people by typing "/unfreeze" Banning (/ban) Usage: /ban (name) (reason) This is widely known as one of the most deadly tools in the arsenal. It causes the player to be ejected from the server and permanently kept out. Anyone who tries to use the banned username to log in will be rejected and disconnected, until a possible unban. This is a LAST resort and is only used after multiple kicks and warnings, which will have all failed. Use this sparingly and ONLY if necessary. The less bans you have the better. Abuse of this command will result in an instant demote, with no warnings, as it is a serious offense. To unban someone, type "/unban (name) (reason)". Part 3: Operator Up! If you are a nice, helping person, you might earn a rank up to Operator, which has a light blue name. This is the last moderating rank, and is one rank short of administrator (or Super Operator). You once again gain more commands and an increased draw size for cuboids and the like. The two main moderation commands for Operators are IPBans and BanAlls. IP Banning (/banip) Usage: /banip (name/IP) (reason) This command permanently stops ANYONE connecting with a certain IP address from logging in, even if the username is not banned. If a username is used, the last IP the username connected with is banned. This is ONLY for use with people who try to dodge bans by using multiple accounts, and should not be used otherwise. Banning All (/banall) Usage: /banall (name/IP) (reason) This is the ULTIMATE moderation tool. It bans everyone that has the username, the IP Address of the username and EVERY account that has logged in with that address. This is mainly used for serious offenders, or people at school who think it's fun to get on and have a mass griefing session. That's all I have to say about it, and I hope it teaches some people about how and when to use these commands. Comments and Feedback appreciated! |

Nice guide Xesdra =P I've always wanted to know what /patrol did, but I never used it incase it did something bad that would get me a demote or something. |

Nice man, only thing I'd say is members shouldn't go all vigilante on us and be on constant patrol, and grief hunt. They've got their commands to keep the server in check if there's a lack of higher ranks at hand I think. Can we get a url for this? I'll stick a banner up for it on the school map :] |

Nice, i vote for a sticky! 2 sugestions: - Maybe note that begging for promotion to OP or stuff, doesn't work. And even may work against you. - Maybe link to other documentation/post about the other commands they can now use /water /fire /cubiod etc. And i agree, /freeze is the most powerfull tool. |

Small question: why don't we let guests place lava or water? Almost every few minutes there's a guest asking for a few blocks of either one or the other. |

Lim recently enabled lava/water for guests and then quickly disabled it because it resulted in, surprise surprise, lots of water and lava spam. |

If you announce that 'members can now place water and lava', everyone will start placing them just because they now can. Maybe if we sneakily turn it on . . . ![]() Also, in risk of sounding like the noob I really am, what is the issue with too many water or lava blocks? |

Since we have no physics there really isnt any harm in too much water/lava besides them being slightly more annoying to clean up. |

BLERG! WHERE IS LIM?! We NEED to change the OP colour X,.x; The op's earned it by popular vote on another thread ![]() I think my eyes were just raped. =( On a more serious note: Good job Xes. (: |

The main problem with water/lava is they spam them everywhere. It really makes a mess out of main. Most people are eager to help a guest place a couple blocks and show off their fancy cuboid skills. I also think it gives guests another reason to stick around and rank up. |

I also like helping. I am not on freebuild much anymore, but I try to go on once in a while and try to de-spam main. Haven't had to kick anyone yet, but if I go on more I might need too ![]() |

Yeah, when guests had water and lava they did a shabby job of filling pools without draw commands, and spammed it all over main, which was quite an eye sore. I mean I enjoy filling pools and stuff, we all do :] |

Maybe note that how higher your rank is, how higher the penalty for abuseing power or braking server rules? - With great power, comes great responsibility. Or a little bit older text: But the one who does not know and does things deserving punishment will be beaten with few blows. From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked. |
