On a side note, why exactly are so many people condescending towards the developer(s)?

Today's tabloid had this here article about the creator of Minecraft. Near the end he gives the readers four tips on how to become a millionaire, one of which being "listen to the players. Make them feel involved in the project. /../"

You're not feeling involved enough.

Listen to the players and get them involved? UHM - YEAH. But do NOT listen to all the better devs than you are out there, do not ever, ever join #mcc (the coalition of custom coders), ban people from #minecraft for mentioning custom (much better) servers, not update your "alpha" stage game for 2 months etc.
There are a lot of Notch fanboys out there who will jump at your throat for criticizing him but people knowing some "behind the scenes" stuff and i.e. realizing how shitty Minecraft is internally (due to Notch insisting on not getting outside help) or how moody he can be very often speak against him.

Ah well... But yes, he did become a millionaire.

Because he himself is an incredibly condescending ass and seems to have the same attitude to developing as a firstyear high school student (add more stuffs, screw fixing bugs!). I understand he has a lot on his mind atm with all the setting-up-shop and such but are regular small bugfixes really that much too ask?

For example the upcoming "Hell"-dimension. Why the FUCK would you add something like this when over half of the Alpha features don't work without some kind of modding in SMP? And some of the most awesome ones (hello minecarts!) dont even work WITH mods.

And lets even start talking about memory use. For the kind of game Minecraft is it takes up an INCREDIBLE amount of memory. Why? Because "hurrdurr its an Alpha. Ill leave the optimization until we hit Beta".

All well and good and I could come up with a few good excuses for the above.

What put me personally over the edge is how he "fixed" the authentication server troubles that have been popping up lately. Sure the move to Amazon Cloud may have relieved the load somewhat but as we all know this hardly fixes the problem that he keeps on using the same 16-month old code that just cant keep up with the recent explosion of new players. If there wasnt an alternative this too could be grudgingly forgiven. But Notch has an alternative! Namely the code written by Fragmer and... someone but which he refuses too use because it isnt written in Java.

TL;DR We want bugfixes to existing problems, not new features which bring their own truckload of new bugs.

Yup - I'm not hating Notch - he created Minecraft after all, even if it was heavily inspired by some other games. I do, however, repeat like a mantra that Notch should stick to game design, not coding. He has this "features first" kind of attitude SO typical for game designers, who ultimately have to hit some middle ground between their vision and the technical side - doing both at the same time makes you fail at BOTH of them simultaneously if the project gets really big and Minecraft DID become bigger than anybody expected.

Notch blogs and Tweets about all the stuff he's gonna add to the game, birds, fish, seamonsters - that's why players love him. Meanwhile server admins have to cope with a slow, leaking, crashing piece of shit software that barely gets the job done - and he is SO PROUD of his code and afraid that somebody might steal it that he makes fixing his own bugs by the community as hard as possible.

"But the game is in Alpha!" - yes, alpha and beta is when you TEST and FIX stuff as you go along. Not when you add features and introduce more bugs before anything is fixed. He's doing exactly the reverse of what a normal company would do - which is getting the basics right and feed content to players LATER, so that sales continue long after release. If he blows all his wad on ideas NOW and then spends the next year on fixing stuff, nobody will care and Minecraft will die - nobody but modders, coders and server admins care about stability fixes BUT at the same time THESE are the people that provide the most valuable feedback during testing and Notch is NOT listening to them.

Ah, and yes, he hired some people to help him out but from what I understand they will be handling the business side or web development, not Minecraft itself. This is a real, real shame. There are coders in the community that literally work for free and get more stuff fixed and done on a DAILY basis than Notch in the past few MONTHS.

good points made. Nothing to argue.

nobody is perfect, but notch could seriously be a lot better...

use some logic dude... You JUST figured out that an infinite loop of light processing causes a memory leak and thus a hit to performance?
AND THEN you resolve it by setting a global limit to the amount of time the loop can be drawn?

I can make a program which converts Celsius to Kelvin. After only 9 hours of computer programming classes. I'm that good.

Minimoose, it's just adding 273 to kelvin to get celsius, IIRC....
