Has many of you probably have heard the smp server got listed very high on the smp server list @ the official mc forums. ( http://servers.minecraftforum.net/ )
Which is causing a ton of guest to join. I don't mind new players, however i think this is what is causing the extreme lag in smp right now. :| Anyone got any thought about this "invasion"?

Edit: Something needs to be done about it. As it is now it is unplayable.

It went crazy - I just was on the server 3 times for about 5-10 minutes - each time until it started to lag astronomously. And each time after disconnecting I had to retry over and over again cause the server was full. Well, it is full right now - I can't connect and it takes forever to get the rensponse.

It's crazy, griefers/hackers/reallllly annoying guests. Ive seen atleast 20-30 new people within an hour of playing causing lag and a need for admins.

Yeah we don't have the tools to deal with these guys, even when we ban, more just take their place.

The place is getting griefed, and theres crazy duping, and somone said we're getting raided by another server, fucking madness lol

I say either we shutdown until we cant get our name off the list or make a spawn prison :/

We used to have a spawn prison. It failed. Admins left and everyone was trapped.

the server is almost unplayable for me with all the lag around 30sec.
and players are being bombarded with questions like:
are there mobs?
Where is everyone?
Wat's Money?
How do i build?
Due to a lack of admins at times.
Is there any way we can make the server only take # traders/guests at a time

Yeah I mean this is abit of a shock really, from quiet ol' smp to grief and "how do I build" every second. Someone was duping water blocks and spamming them, what a nightmare.

We should have our ip taken off the server list given us exposure, I like smp being a place where most of our guests are from freebuild, so they're trustworthy, and the rest are few enough in number to keep an eye on.

I remember the spawn prison, Xesdra wouldn't believe that I was a builder on freebuild when I got a free trial on smp, and wouldn't let me out :cry:

That certain Minecraft client is out and updated again, probably best to put some more restrictions in place, even if they're only temporary.

Ok this is getting totally out of hand, things are getting griefed, our map is gonna look ugly as hell in no time. I think cities and towns need zoning, namely pandora. I'm gonna try and figure op zoning so I can atleast protect my own town.

To be honest I'd shutdown the server, the lag is so bad that by the time the warning appears on chat they've finished griefing and walked away, same for kicks and bans, Im going to bed soon, it keeps crashing on me anyway. Lets hope we have some ops+ on all night.

Something has to be done, this is just getting ridiculous.

Yeah junco is right, we need some kind of temporary solution, and fast. The lag reaches over a minute at times, and its just too much for an op and a supop to handle. (me and destoned atm)

I might take the server off the list later but for now just report what's happening. People are spamming water? But how? We have plugins to prevent the placement of water below member rank. 0_o

so far we've had several people hacking and getting/placing things they can't, like diamond ore blocks, water, lava, etc. and the lag is massive, did i mention that already?

I know, but somehow they were doing it, I seen like a shitload of water pouring so I went to investigate and when I seen the guy they were somehow placing still water blocks, I have no idea how.

Can't zone the whole world though, the last guy I banned was walking around and editting signs to say swear words instead of locations, and just generaly smashing things stuff up.

The duping is so bad it's funny, diamond houses, and blimps in the sky made of iron "I mined it"

But yeah its getting shitty, I'd atleast take it off the list asap, so we can weed out offenders, atm they're just being replaced by more.

Yeah, we need to maybe switch to a backup/update-style world for a while, so we don't get so much damage on the main map.

As for the lag, that's what we get for being the best. The only remedy would be to decrease the player slots, maybe? That has drawbacks too.

It was resolved. The whole thing caused another problem though but it's a bit technical. Due to the Realms plugin having been taken over by another developer you had to add ALL commands to a group's permission, not just /realms. This caused our command strings to be too long for the data type defined in the DB though, so many commands, especially for OPs, got "eaten" and have to be re-added when Hafnium or I have time - I changed the data type to TEXT from VARCHAR(256) (so from 256 characters max - retarded data type for this field to up to 64kb of data).

Anyways, yeah, adding the server to the list might have been a mistake. I expected a SLIGHT increase in guest traffic but not this shit. In fact we have been listed on another server directory for months (both SMP and Freebuild) but it didn't cause any problems. I didn't know this particular list (which, granted, is almost official) is as popular.

If you need backups to be put in, tell me.

Maybe the answer to how to protect the server from griefers and random idiots is to make everyone new not only accept the rules but also post some application form on the forum? This would make it impossible for anyone just to enter the server for the 1st time, destroy anything in sight and leave w/wo getting banned.

And it would be better to at least know anything about the new people in the community.

Has that idea ever been considered before?

I feel the crowd that comes in from freebuild, and people who just happen to find our smp, was pretty decent for traffic.

Well I would say back spawn up, but well guests who might actually return, might lose their stuff.

This has been sort of handy in a way, to show that there's not alot we can do when stuff like this happens, the amount of times I died from teleporting to a guest, was infuriating, so now I'm walking around with iron tools :(

I think Ops, being a moderating rank should be able to /kit diamond tools, and armour like supops. It'd be nice to toggle health, when your purely moderating so a guest can't just kill you when your inspecting their chests, or you don't fall of a cliff while doing so, but as thats not easily done, diamond armour wouldn't go a miss for now. The tools would be good for when you die, as you can replace them quickly, and continue your patrol.

We will install a HelpTicket plugin soon which will allow people to create support tickets offline - i.e. if they spot a griefer or need assistance otherwise. Admins will be able to check these out every time they log in AND we can set it up so it sends mails too!

When it comes to guests - we actually do have very good anti-grief measures but due to LOLNotch they don't quite work.
i.e. we do prevent guests from spamming dangerous blocks but the way Notch's LOLHooks work you only ever check blocks when you right-click or left-click with your mouse, and not when the actual block is created in the world... This is another case of LOLNotch's implementation of LOLServer-Client interactions. That way if guests use i.e. one of the ever-so-popular hacking tools they can spam blocks simply by moving and never actually right or left clicking and that can't be intercepted unless you have a wrapper (like we used to) to block the packets. -.-

We could alleviate the problem if we set Realms to not allow movement for guests until they type /accept_the_rules, which is really easy and we don't want guests to do anything anyway (I just always thought being stuck might scare off first-timers).

I find the situation we had on the server should be treated as a learning experience since it showcased some weak points.

Maybe guest should only be able to move in the spawn zone? Then they can move but not very far. :wink:

Well, when I came in, there was only Junco and Reload there, (and Haf, but I'm not sure if he was AFK or not), we decided to implement a ban-on-sight griefer/raider hunt, and we eventually managed to get every single guest (About 20-25 since the time I got there) to accept the rules, learn to use kits, show them where they could build, etc.

anyways, we managed to control the situation, but I asked Haf to check the logs for everyone that logged that day, so we could check their inventories later. He said that would be a pain, and I agree, but I am willing to check for every name that logged in that day if you guys give me the logs...

So you want the log with all the PMs, AND all our player .dat files? Suuuuuure. I'll get right on that.

Ugh... there is no non-private logs? I mean... it's just a thing of pressing ctrl-f and seatching for the word "connected", and write all the names you get somewhere...

We don't check the inventories of normal new players, and a higher volume shouldn't really change that. Sure, its easy to check their inventories when they're online, but when they're offline its a real pain.
