Yo guys, I'm currently doing a character development project for my animation course. I have to hand in 45 seconds worth line tests for my character, one of them being a lip sync, and I'm struggling to find a short quote that suits him well. I've been looking through old detective movies, but no dice. So would anyone recommend any characters, or movies I should take a look at? Don't even have to be from a crime movie, so long as the voice works well. The character I'm working on is Lester Brookes, a detective from I don't know, New York? Seattle? He's somewhere in his 30's, heavy drinker, smoker, has problems with paranoia, depression. I have some of the first sketches I did of him below, can't find my developed ones. Any help would be great ![]()

I shall try and think of some more, seeing as i am off sick today, i shall browse my movie collection. Are you going to be ripping audio from these films to lip sync to? or re-record the lines yourself? ![]() ![]() ------ ![]() Dwight from Sin City - "This time I can't bring myself to tell him to shut up. Sure he's an asshole... Sure he's dead... Sure I'm just imagining that he's talking. None of that stops the bastard from being absolutely right." ![]() Detective Somerset from Se7en - "If we catch John Doe and he turns out to be the devil, I mean if he's Satan himself, that might live up to our expectations, but he's not the devil. He's just a man. " ![]() J.J. 'Jake' Gittes from China Town - "Let me explain something to you, Walsh. This business requires a certain amount of finesse." (then have your character take a drink and smash the bottle lol) ![]() Leonard from Memento (ok not a detective, but has some of the same character traits) - "So where are you? You're in some motel room. You just - you just wake up and you're in - in a motel room. There's the key. It feels like maybe it's just the first time you've been there, but perhaps you've been there for a week, three months. It's - it's kind of hard to say. I don't - I don't know. It's just an anonymous room." |

Yeah I'll be ripping the audio straight out, probably by downloading a video off youtube, so I can see how they say it. I have to keep the quote real short, as for every second of speech I have to draw up 12 frames ![]() Nice man! Yeah not sure Morgan's voice fits the bill, but Brad Pitt's character in Se7en might be a winner. I've checked out Chinatown already, he's abit too cool and collected. My lecturer's been real insistant the soundbite must seem almost taylor made for the character, which put me off using Steve Buscemi's voice, and Teddy's voice from Shutter Island. Most voices I've found are either abit too feeble or over confident. I'll take a look at the others, thanks, if you see any videos, just post a link! |

i guess i forgot to ask how you are animating this, i was assuming you were doing it in 3d, but on re-reading your post you don't mention anything like that so im not guessing you are hand drawing each frame?!! does your tutor not recommend toonboom or a similar package? (same software i think family guy/simpsons etc use - or maybe a different name) Im struggling to find any decent clips on you tube but you could try Robert Downy Jr's character Paul Avery in the film Zodiac.... ill keep thinking ![]() but Leonard from Memento is probably a contender thou ![]() EDIT: ![]() IF you get really suck you could always try Eddie Valiant from WFRR. A guy talking to a rabbit is pretty schizophrenic ^^ |

Oh yeah sorry, it's a traditional line test so it's 12fps, and it's all in pencil, we do have toonboom, but not in the room I'm shooting it in, where they have the lightboxes and camera rigs (ridiculous I know) so I have to use animaatiokone, which is pretty poor. Because the character has to be acting, they have to be animated in a scenario, like being on the phone, or reading something outloud, so sadly they can't just say anything :/ These are all great suggestions, a big help, just watching Dwight from Sin City right now, deep voice, but nothing a little editing can't fix, just need to hear a good short line from him. I'll check out Bruce Willis too while I'm at it. |

yeah Hartigans (Willis) character might be more useful being a detective and all, most on sin city's over dub work uses pretty rough and deep vocals. |

I'd go for Jake Gittes personally. Don't set your characters home city as Seattle though man, that is pretty lame. You want harsh and gritty when it comes to film noir. |

Problem with Jake Gittes is that he's quite confident, while my character isn't very harsh or gritty, he's a broken man ![]() Most detectives are usually quite forward and confident, while Lester's abit more timid, and iscolated. It's why Teddy Daniels should of been perfect, but he whispers through the whole damn film, Scorsese's a great director, but I just hate films today where its all raspy whispers, Sin City gets away with it, but some films just milk it. For now, I'm gonna go with what Teddy Daniels says in Shutter Island, until I find something better. "I mean these are all violent offenders right? I mean they've hurt people." Any programs you'd recommend for ripping audio? I'm not using a youtube video. |

Quote: Don't even have to be from a crime movie, so long as the voice works well.
I assumed that to mean it didn't HAVE to be a detective, so long as the quote and voice fit.

Aw man, this is slightly off topic, but theres a manga/anime out there called "Detective Conan" or something. I haven't actually read or watched it in a while, but its really good! Not too many awesome quotes though, from what i can remember |

Don't bring manga on to a thread I started Doc, you can even take it to how scented toilet paper is just so utterly stupid, or the pure skill in which George Bush utilized in dodging incoming footwear, but not manga. In other news, you reminded me to check some Doc Holiday quotes, almost forgot ![]() |
