...Johnny Depp.

The reason I made this thread is cause he is voicing the titular character in a new film called 'Rango', and my mate pointed out that it's actually really appropriate for him as the character he voices is a Chameleon. I couldn't agree more, and decided to put together a collection of photo's from his movies just to show how versatile he really is. This isn't his entire back catalogue, as I really only added the movies that show him in costume, or that I really rather love. Like Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Blow or Once Upon a Time in Mexico. Seriously though, I'm a massive fan of the Depp, so I'd happily watch all these movies. :mrgreen:

And to facilitate the discussion part of this discussion thread, I'll ask you all a question; If you could only watch one Johnny Depp film, and then never watch anymore ever again, what one would it be? :wink:

I agree with you, I really like Depp as an actor.
Also enjoyed watching him recently in "The Tourist" (but it was hard because of Angelina :P ).
If I was to pick a Depp movie from those I've seen, it would be the first Pirates of the Caribbean.
Jack Sparrow is such an awesome character and Johnny just nailed that one, love his performance. <3

Also thanks for pointing out "Rango". I haven't heard anything of it yet, so I just saw a trailer and it looks like it's going to be a good movie! ;)

Hmmm, maybe I just should've mentioned which movies I didn't like his role in :mrgreen:

Didn't like his role in platoon, loved the movie though. Although I'm more of a fan of acid crazy kinda war movies like apocalypse now or the modern ones with all the fancy tricks like band of brothers/the pacific or saving private ryan. Man, there are so many propper war movies :mrgreen:

Didn't like public enemies as much as the other movies he played in.

Ah well, I like a lot of his movies but there's a big difference between a movie being freaking good or just merely entertaining.

i ain't a film buff so i haven't seen many of these, but it surprised me how he could go from being superb in Pirates of the Carribean to just cringeworthy and just plain annoying in Alice in Wonderland... but then, i detested Alice in Wonderland from beginning to end, which was probably more to do with Tim Burton than Mr Depp.

I didn't deteste Alice in Wonderland, but I just love the story :mrgreen:
Like charly and the chocolat factory, the original was far better, but that didn't make the remake bad. Gene Wilder was just awesome in that movie.
Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor in one movie is just epic :5:

I do remember 21 Jump Street, yeah. They used to show it when Sky TV was in it's infancy over here. And in fact, at the time, was called BSB.

There was barely any channels compared to these days of Digital, and to be honest, I remember it all being a little depressing. Didn't watch the show though. :P

Yeahh he's ace, two films I need to watch Public Enemies, and Fear and Loathing. I'm not feeling his role in Public Enemies, but no doubt he'll surprise me. If I could only watch one of them, it'd be Sleepy Hollow I think.

Isn't there a few movies you're missing? Or were you only covering your favourites?

Fear and Loathing has to be his best performance mixed with best film for me, Hunter S Thompson was such an eccentric character, who else would you get to play him other than one of our finest character/method actors.

Close 2nd is What's eating gilbert grape, not a particularly interesting character, but the drama is impeccable, and its one of my favourite Leo films too.

His role in platoon is very short, but he has one of the best performances in the film and it's what i look forward too when i watch it.

I only wish he would just get the fuck away from that stale idiot Burton.

Moist you forgot his explosive role in the 1984 A Nightmare on Elm Street!

I am normally let down by film adaptations of books, but I haven't read Public Enemies so I assume that is why I liked the film a lot. I think most people are let down even by good adaptations because you can always imagine the book in a different way to someone else, and some books are written in such an open way that it's hard to do an interpretation which even 50% of people will agree with (Not saying Public Enemies was a good adaptation, of course I haven't read the book so I can't say). That's why when I watch a film adapted from a book I try and completely separate the two, to ignore the fact that I've read the book :D

Of course there are other reasons such as length, but these can generally be solved by just making the film, longer? As you pointed out (if only every film could follow the lotr trilogy, I love long films 8) ). Artistic license pisses me off as well because most of the time it's shit (Alice in Wonderland) :ugly:

LOTR was beautifully done. The book and the movie were great imo.
I liked every adaptation of Alice and I've seen about a dozen or more of em :mrgreen: Malice in wonderland was like a giant acid trip, cult in my opinion :mrgreen:
I usually try to keep an open mind about movies after reading the books.

Some of kings books being turned into movies sucked big time.
Freaking hated that one about the car, carrie, pet semetary, etc.
Loved IT, the shining, runing man, langoliers, green mile, dolan's cadillac and Kingdom hospital.

I think it's just hard to make a movie out of a good book, it's not gonna be a good movie without any propper effort.

Best book to film adaptation was no country for old men, it was literally word for word :D and i watched the film, then read the book and it was enjoyable both times.

i haven't seen the new alice in wonderland yet, but im not sure i really want to, im so sick of burton and the fact he hasn't had an original idea since beetle juice :shock: he is gonna royalley kill the adams family remake :< i mean piss and shit on raul julia's grave.

I say this with the utmost sincerity. If they had any respect for him at all, they wouldn't do this. It'll just be a 3D mess like Alice in Wonderland, and will unfortunately harm the original films in doing so, cause the retarded masses will assume it's a sequel.

Tim Burton needs to take some time out, and think up an original idea already.

just imagine him doing a new beetle juice... no more scary stop frame animations and depp would probably be cast along side the usual burton suspects...

but the new adams family, all i can picture is a CGI pugsly bouncing around the screen after swallowing some rubber poison or something... what i loved about the original adams family was how depraved they were, but in a really casual way, not in your face "hey im a sadist" but more like subtle deliveries of lines that just make you go... okaaaay.... ^^

I went to see Alice in Wonderland at the IMAX cinema, I was quite disappointed, too much dirty CGI, too evident that everything was shot against a green screen. Burton had sort of made up his own weak story based Lewis Caroll's stuff, even the Jabberwocky was in it.

Somehow I still enjoyed the film, but I have no idea how, there's so much wrong with it. The Johnny Depp take on the hatter was pretty cool, no idea why he had to have a love interest with Alice though.

Aww i love you more and more mate :hug: they call it the Lucas Approach... :lol: there was a time when burton would make a model for his sweeping thru town shots and do models for his creatures... but sadly no longer!

I saw Jurassic park the other night, and still imo the greatest use of CGI i've seen in a live action film yet. Breath taking and revolutionary; this only being possible due to the talented physical effects of stan winston (rip), as they scanned the real life models into the computers and used hand animated puppets to control the computer animations... amazing!

Good post McMoist, couldn't agree more.

Watched an early film of his late last year, think it was calked The Ninth Gate, even back then you can see how he is driven by totally taking on a character and making it his own.
