`Band Of Brothers' Inspiration Winters Dies At 92

http://www.npr.org/templates/story/stor ... =132803607

I'm a massive fan of the mini-series band of brothers and the literature it was adapted from, but more importantly i love the historic fact behind it all (and pretty much ww2 history in general is a really interesting topic i enjoy reading and learning about).

I think my favourite and most moving parts of the show were the real life interviews with the men of easy company, and it's horrific to see some of their expressions when they recount the events of the war, and how their voices break and or eyes go misty.

I know a couple of people here are really into the show so, thought i would share the sad news.

"If you can, find that peace within yourself, that peace and quiet and confidence that you can pass on to others, so that they know that you are honest and you are fair and will help them, no matter what, when the chips are down." - Maj. Richard "Dick" Winters

R.I.P.

nah, i dont read the etfl forum, just saw the news article on my normal morning browse/avoid work time :) The news didnt come out of his passing till after the funeral (which was very low key).

At Sgt. George Luz funeral, 1600 people turned up to pay their respects.

Exactly, many people die because bureaucratic assholes think it merits having some freaking battle to prove who's got the longest cock :?
He at least made it through that.

War doesn't determine who is right, only who is left

(yes it seems its time to pull open the famous quote books)

I've never finished the series. This might make me. I really enjoyed it. I love war movies in general, well realistic ones. One that got to me was "We Were Soldiers" with Mel Gibson (the asshole). I think its crazy how a man like that can smile a true smile like in that picture.
Just yesterday I think it was, we had a "moment of silence" for i think 6 people who were killed and 1 congresswoman who was shot in the head. I understand these things are terrible, but not once in my almsot 15 years of schooling have we had a moment of silence for any of these men.

I know this is long, but this is my last topic. My girlfriend, who i've been with for 3 years, has an uncle who was at war. She says he has these moments where he wont talk for hours. It's horrifying. War always gets me. This man was walking out of a supermarket (im not sure where) when a bomb went off inside. He's been scarred since then. War is something none of us can comprehend.

There are people on this board who can, they are either in the military or their countries fought wars on their own soil. Try to remember that there have been wars in Europe pretty much constantly since the end of the last great war. These countries have fought wars in Europe in the last 20 or so years: Chechnya, Croatia, Georgia, Moldova, Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Romania, Russia, Slovenia, South Ossetia, Transnistria, expand that to 30 years and I'd be typing for ever. Not to mention Spain, The UK and Ireland with the most prominent terrorist campaigns. Over in East Asia there have been ongoing conflicts since 1945 be it Islamic insurgency since 1965 in the Philippines or the many different battles and small scale "secret" wars along the borders. Thats before we get to Korea, Burma and Vietnam and then there's Cambodia a possible 2 million killed by an American backed communist. Africa and the Middle east are nothing but conflict.

You live in the only place in the world where there has been peace.

Don't ever include anyone in your ignorance we are for the most part older, wiser and more experienced, many of us can comprehend.

To be fair cardboard, i would hardly say that was accurate, i would never say that it has always been a peace for place  They did have the American Civil War and American culture in general was pretty much built up on violence and that there was no real army before the civil war for a long time, so all citizens were required to carry arms. Don't forget the bloody gang wars in 1846-50ish between the "natives" and the Irish immigrants.

Also, don't forget the War on Terror and the War on Drugs! :ugly:

---

Also, man has been at war with man since the first caveman sharpened a pointy stick and started competing for woman and meat!

Lighten the mood a little bit ;)

I meant in the life time of the average poster here... can any of us remember the American Civil war?

I have never and will never see that film.

One thing I've always wanted to know was the "Stars and Bars" that close to the "Stars and Stripes" on the Bull Run?

To be honest the American Civil War doesn't interest me as much as the War of Independence. Not hard to see how the country ends up with a war on drugs and a war on terror when the popular historical view is that its a country founded on wars of ideals.

I also kinda like Gangs of New York though I think it might be a guilty pleasure.

I found gangs of new york an uninspired boring movie that got hyped :P Anyway, we usually had wars with over all other "countries". America had the luxury of not needing other countries, they'll just fight themselves :P
I'm certain that if one of the countries that we're living in get's into serious war and bombs start falling, most of us'll just piss their pants and cry for mommy. Tbh and tbf, we've lost our balls to fight for our rights after the 50s and the 60s. Some of us still got it , most of us are weaklings depending on social care, internet and water taps to run when their turned on!
