Just a little foreword: I'm totally ripping off a project that Scatterbrain was running a while, but I actually have a goal. I want to drum up enough enthusiasm to get a SpA community DF bloodlines game going. For now though... The World of Cyclones
Dwarf fortress is a simulation of a, well, dwarf fortress. Whats extraordinary about this game is the level of detail it simulates it to. Each dwarf has specific likes, dislikes, motivations, dispositions, skills. You have to worry about sieges, monsters, your economy, the whims of your rulers, food supplies, and the happiness of your people, all while working through an ASCII interface. ![]() If that's not a threatening name, I don't know what is... What I'm going to do here is give you a taste of what DF is all about by chronicling the life of my new fortress. I'll need players who are interested in having dwarves named after them. Be forewarned; there's a good chance that your dwarve will get killed by a goblin, or a giant, or a mystical iguana with wings, batman, etc. Don't say I didn't warn you. Anyway, one I get six names (7 including my own), we'll get underway. |

I'd like to be Orangebrew the mason/engraver please. I always like my first mason/engraver for some weird reason. Maybe it would be better if you would use a texturepack for this, so at least the people who are interested know what's going on. |

I really can't stand the texture packs. If it gets really bad, I'll switch over. If you have any good ones, I'll take a look. The only problem is I want the periods and commas to actually look like periods and commas. ![]() I don't generally embark with an engraver, but I'll name my mason for you orange. |

Yeah, I saw Hafnium playing this, and for anyone wondering, its almost exactly like minecraft, except as if you were in charge of a minecrafting civilization that was required to eat and stuff. Its really awesome, but hard to understand at times- like farming, you have to flood underground lakes onto your farmland prior to making your mushroom farms. And there is so much stuff that can happen in it that its ridiculous. Anyways, I wanna be a fisherdwarf- Fehzor the FisherDwarf. Or if not, then maybe like, a craftsdwarf type thing. If I am to die, I'd prefer to get eaten by a giant carp. Oh, and I wanna eat a kitten in it. |

Proto the medical dwarf? I'd volunteer to play, but my skill plummeted after 41d, and since I've been best off staying well into Adventurer mode. |

I actually was able to get the game to let me name the fortress "Ganadrashgur," which translates to, "Specialattack." I need a good name for the dwarves themselves; I can supply a group name. I'll probably just generate a few until I see one that I like. Edit: One of the random gens was "The Chambers of Secreting." Anyone else find that funny? |

i'll move this to the 'other games' subforum after a few pages cos, like you say, will be interesting to MC but this isn't exactly the right place either since orange took engraver, i'll settle for woodcutter in the hope that you draft him (with his axe skillz) into the military + something cool happens to him ![]() |

My embark profile is 2 miners, Woodcutter/Carpenter, Mason/Engraver/Architect, A metalworker (with related skills), a Brewer, and a appraiser/record keeper. Yeah, I was going to request a move one it got underway. I just wanted to target the players that already play a similar game.since orange took engraver, i'll settle for woodcutter in the hope that you draft him (with his axe skillz) into the military + something cool happens to him ![]() I was planning on naming the record keeper/organizer guy after me. ![]() So, we have: 'Crackhead' Bomrekgur, Miner 'Hit Girl' Kudustkadol, Miner 'Scatterbrain' Berbesmar, Woodcutter and Carpenter 'Orangebrew' Edtulathel, Mason/Engraver 'Prototype' Edtulathel, Metalsmith 'Fehzor' Risenaved, Farmer, Fisher, and most importantly, Brewer 'Hafnium' Bavastlogem, Appraiser/Recordkeeper and soon-to-be broker We're going to be bringing along two hunting dogs for early defense and generations of war puppies. It took me forever, but I found a site with a good sedimentary layer for iron and coal, as well as a river, trees, and no aquifer. ![]() I'm embarking. I can still change the last guys name though. Edit: Hit_Girl wants in. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Granite, 126
I've set hit_girl and crackhead to digging out the entrance of our fortress. My standard design is two redundant drawbridges with fortifications on the sides. At the end of this, the trade depot and then a trapped hallway. My philosophy is that if anything gets past all that, my defensive forces are already dead. >.>![]() ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Slate, 126
Hit and Crackhead are in the process of digging the farm, kitchen, and food storage. Well actually, Hit_Girl has passed out in her Rum, and Crackhead in his ale. At least, they're sleeping on the barrels or something. Blame it on scatter. He's not making beds fast enough.![]() The rooms I have dug out here are most likely temporary. I'll be making a full farming complex lower down, and I like to keep my food storage near my farms, and I like to keep my meeting halls near my food storage. I'll probably adapt the food area into a barracks/dining hall/militia office. We struck magnetite AND coal on the 26th. Prototype is ecstatic. We'll have shiny new iron picks for our sleepy miners in no time. The copper ones just aren't cutting it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Felsite and Hematite, 126
Hit and Crackhead have been busy digging out a level to get the industry started. Scatterbrain is busily felling trees, although I haven't set up a stockpile for the logs yet. As soon as I get a mechanic shop up, I'm going to put up the bridges.

I'm splitting this here; the previous post is getting too long. Malachite, 126
Hit and Crackhead are busily cutting a path to what will be the farm and food storage portion of the fortress. I will most likely put the main living quarters in the large void show to the southwest. In this picture, I have the masonry and carpentry section dug out out to the south, and the metalsmithing section to the north. I'm going to try something new and seal off the main mineshaft with another drawbridge. You never know what lurks in the deep. Galena, 126
Migrants arrived! We now have six new dwarves to name.1) Catten Athelnitig, Cheese Maker 2) "Junco" Ingizlorbam, A Child 3) Cilob Siguntimshur, Cook 4) "Balls" Zasitvathsith, Herbalist 5) Onol Betanlitast, Farmer 6) Stinthad Zimingiz, Farmer A bunch of stinking hippies and a child that belongs to none of them. Oh well, at least we have more dwarves to haul stuff around the fort. Meanwhile, the USEFUL members of the fortress continue to make progress down below. I've got Orangebrew working on some doors, after he finishes the bridges of course. He also needs to hook up the bridges to a lever that he needs to build. I predict he'll be needing quite a good bit of rum. I'll have to get Fehzor to set up a still. |

I played DF back in the day (6 months ago or so). The complexity of this game is insane but it is very addictive. I fucking hate it when some of my dwarves go on strike, but i love it at the same time. xD |

So recognisable: Traders at depo with lots of stuff you need, goblin army at your front gate, running out of food/booze, demons from below, . . . The complexity of this game is insane but it is very addictive. I fucking hate it when some of my dwarves go on strike, but i love it at the same time. xD Dwarves are having a party in the dining room -.- |

I think I missed a few months here. I don't intend on chronicling every month of digging. It gets much more interesting later anyway. Sandstone, 126
Here, I'm preparing to flood the room I plan to do all my farming in while Hit_Girl works on clearing out the kitchen and planned food storage.I decided that I don't need a cheesemaker seeing as I don't much like dog cheese, so I'm training Ollie as a third miner. He's really slow though. I've ordered Prototype to make three iron pickaxes to equip the whole team. Scatterbrain has been busily felling trees while the ground is still clear. I'll also need to have Prototype set up the floodgate as soon as possible, or I may just run out of rum. The floodgate allows me to muddy the farm area with water from the river without flooding it forever. Dwarves are incapable of productive work if they aren't at least slightly drunk. Sleeping quarters should be my next priority, but I want to free up some more ore and fuel for Proto first. I'm considering drafting some of the more...useless...dwarves into a training squad for now. I'll need scatter to throw together a few training swords and bucklers. |

Weewt! Prototype was possessed and made THIS: Since Kirshi already has experience cutting gems, I think I'll have her work on some gemcrafts for the next group of traders. Proto still hasn't made those iron picks, so Ollie is just sitting around sucking his thumb and fantasizing about cheese. The dwarves have filled the ore and fuel stockpiles at least. |
