I thought it was using x-ray diffraction patterns to identify whatever was in the carrier, but I don't know if that could identify a specific micro-organism/molecule and tell you how much of it there is (which I assume the patent is saying and I doubt it could). On my course we use it in crystallography to work out the micro-structure of materials and shizzle.
