Ok , I know not everyone has that special someone yet , but they will and one day when they find them , they can venture onto this thread to find the answer to the question I'm asking.

My girlfriend is an illustrator , I want to get her something useful for that

She does a lot of preliminary work as sketches then goes onto photoshop , she does some painting but not much , what can i give her to compliment and help her?

... Im not much of a drawer :)

Crayons.
A colouring-in book
A ruler
A sponge
An Eisel
A book of pretty animals
Porn
Roses
A better mouse, in the shape of a pen and a peice of paper - so she can DRAW while she draws.
A curry
A PC
tenner in a card.

Take your pick.

Being an artist myself (not professional)... I suggest these things:
-Sketchbook
-A set of detailed pen/pencils
-A drawing tablet (so she can draw on the cpu! :D )
-If you have the ability to draw you can draw HER a picture and frame it
-A new paint brush/brushes
-A carrying case to hold it all in

Valentines day sucks...

But its nive that you want to give her something useful. Thats much better that this crappy heart-chocolate-stuff companies just produce to make money with. :)

I hate any day where you are expected to do something because the general population does so. This includes Christmas, valentines day, birthdays etc etc.

I'll give someone a present when I feel like it, and not because customs say to do so.

We should get gifts every day of the year!

You don't hold things well?
You could get her a drawer (maybe like a jewelry box one? IDK), and then come up with some witty saying about it "For the best drawer I know", or the likes.

Maybe you could get her one of those Sketchboards that you can prop up at the back so they're on a slant, not sure what they're called, but it makes people look real pro at illustrating 8)

Well I'm taking the woman to a fancy italian place up the road, I'm not paying for her though

If she dosent like it, then you can get mad and tell her about the price and the amount of time you went to get the pills, and get really mad when you start talking about the box and the paper! Not like you can return any of those things you bought.

Saint what ever you do don't tell the future Mrs Saint that all she can expect on her wedding night is a nice cuddle!!

If she hasn't already got it, Adobe Illustrator, I use it all the time. Brilliant for illustrations. Otherwise go for the wacom tablet, it will make her drawing so much easier. Using the mouse is like painting with your fist

Anyway back to the original post.

Revenge Valentines (whether you believe in it or not) is not the time for practical gifts. I di agree with Saint about the corny expectation but if you do "opt in" then do it proper.

Don't believe any girl that says they would love a practical gift, deep down they want something that reflects how you feel towards her.

Buy her a practical gift for her Birthday.

Cook a meal, make her a box of home made truffles.
