This was already attempted with movies. People simply don't give a crap on the extra smells and thus it failed. |

I dunno, smell is one of the strongest triggers of memory and emotional response. Might be interesting as long as smells are not to accurately mapped, zombies and sewers would be grim but in an adventure / rpg like Oblivion being able to smell the forests or distinct markets and taverns might be fun. However most of these things end up being gimmicks. |

I think anything suppose to be bad smelling will use a relative smell that won't be off putting. I can't see this going anywhere though, smells play on memory, and I can't say I've ventured through a worm's guts ![]() |

It would be very cool if it were just smells for woodland, seaside and other nice recognisable smells. Although I would only ever pay for something like this if I had way too much disposable income. |

If I could play Oblivion, and walk around smelling the forest... I'd quite like that. |

This is a pretty stupid idea, who cares what things smell like, if you want to smell stuff, get out of your home and walk in a forest, now that's awesome! |

What's the point of making graphics realistic when you can just go outside and everything is realistic? What's the point of having sounds in a game, such as birds tweeting, if they don't add to gameplay? I hate all the gimmicky shit like 3D in movies, since it doesn't add to a sensory system, but making graphics in games more pretty, adding good surround sound and including smell add to the immersion of the game. Saying that, I don't actually care that much since I play TF2 on the lowest settings possible. For games like the elder scrolls though, it would make quite a big difference. Plus you can't go around killing animals with big maces or shoot people in the face outside, well you can, but it would be short-lived. |

I guess its cause minecraft doesn't have any of that stuff... the only immersion it has is it's addictive nature. I very much doubt it's sound scape is very interesting. |

Well that, and it's got a great sense of exploration when you're playing. It's easy to get immersed in the game, as you tend to hold dear the items you've accumalated, and things you have made, you soon become your little square man. Infact Minecraft creeped me out way more than Resident Evil 5 did ![]() |

I'll have to check it out, a good score and soundscape can make a break a game for me. |

The sound in Minecraft makes a massive difference in gameplay. Try playing without it on hard and see how long you last ![]() |

Hmmmm looks cool, like Minimoose said, if I had some disposable income and saw this on the shelf while I was browsing I would probably buy it; probably wouldn't end up using it past its first refill unless it really blew me away but its a nice idea ![]() |

i doubt it would be something i would buy myself, but its cool that we are getting to this point technologically, but, alas its not a must have item or anything ![]() |

Cardboard mentioned something to me that made me also think how a lack of sounds and score can also in its own right be immersive, e.g. silent hill or the vacuum of space in Dead Space.EDIT: Didn't go for the triple post, wise moist would castrate me, but pretty interesting article. http://uk.videogames.games.yahoo.com/bl ... it-by-ear. |

Church in woods is scary! But... What about woods in a church? ... I digress, yes you had a few good arguments, my point still stands though, I have no intention to smell my games! XD |

Smell is everywhere though, the only way I can see smell breaking immersion is if it smells wrong for the given area, similarly the only way I can see it helping immersion is it smells right for a given area, but that is the same for anything else (audio or visual) in a game as well.
