A net split is caused by a server disconnecting from the Qnet network.

The Qnet network is one large network of servers linked to eachother all providing access to the clients.
If one of the servers in the cluster gets disconnected from the rest, it means it has split off. In that case you could end up alone, or with just a couple of people in the channel (depending on who more are connected to your server). In the meanwhile server tries to re-establish the connection with the other servers. Once thats done all users should be in 1 channel again.
