The Necromancer (4970)

So, one of my favorite one/two-man indie studios (depends on the title =), Puppygames, have released another title - or rather a beta/demo of it, since "only" two of the 5 planets are playable at the moment (which still means 30 levels total).

At heart Revenge of the Titans is a Tower Defense game BUT it quickly turns more into something like an arcade-y RTS. All your structures can be attacked (nom nomed on :-D) by the Titans and while the first few types of them just walk along preset lines you will soon encounter smarter foes who actively try staying outside your turret range or even send in their underlings to keep your defenses occupied while they break through them.

Resources are harvested StarCraft/Flowers vs Zombies style - you place refineries close to depletable crystal fields and collect them by clicking (or holding) your LMB over them. Obviously there are a lot of upgrades and weapon types BUT in a smart twist not all of them are necessarily better - i.e. Heavy Blasters cost twice as much as regular ones (or thrice, I don't recall) but only deal 33% more damage and hold much less ammo (yes, turrets need to be reloaded) - however, they can pierce shields, which basic blasters can't and so on.

Considering the dynamic nature of the opposing forces you can rarely simply set up a nice defense and sit back watching the level play out - you need to adapt to the situation quickly.

The graphics are, in my humble opinion, absolutely amazing. It's the patented Puppygames style with subdued colors and very bright highlights - everything is pixellated by design BUT the effects, sounds and animations are actually quite modern - it's the perfect blend of retro-style art and current technology.

Here's the amazing trailer with a nice remix of Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D minor (yes, the music in the game is just as cool as the graphics =):
So what are you waiting for! Grab the demo or preorder the game, since it's only half the price at the moment with new content on its way (the 3 remaining planets).

Here are two articles pulled from Rock, Paper, Shotgun, including an interview with one of the developers:

http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2010/04 ... he-titans/

P.S. It's CRUCIAL to gather as many resources as you can in each level as they carry over to subsequent maps. Also, Scanners are a must-have - they provide all turrets around them with greater range and this effect stacks - you can defend multiple fronts with just one encampment that way! The rest is up to you, since all upgrades have their uses. =)

P.P.S. Buy their previous titles too - I own and love them all. :-D

The demo is stupid, I spend like 30k in research and everything that opened up ( the cool expensive stuff ) was not avaliable in the demo.

But it looks like a nice game indeed.

False positives are a mess. I don't think the devs should fix it, Norton should. ;-)
Norton was giving false positives for one of the Minecraft Servers identifying an open source IRC Client .dll as a virus. -.-

I'm pretty sure it improved a lot, but it still isn't near the top. Game looks fun :)

And there have been two patches released already. =)
No new content but the devs are trying to fix balance issues so you don't fail after 5 levels or alternatively finish each one with like 10.000 cash.

A nice change was limiting the number of Scanner (thingies improving turret range) stacks to a maximum of 4 per tower, so you don't have rocket launchers shooting enemies before they even appear on the map anymore. ;-)
Their price was increased to $750 up from $250 too!

The Necromancer (4970)
Good idea! ^^
Currently I'm resizing the Gidrah (that's what the creators call them :-P) graphics to include them in my dynamic avatar script - actually I'm adding all 50 Droid Assault droids to it too (50% chance to show my normal avatar, 50% chance to show an avatar from the three games distributed equally).

By the way - another video I haven't posted. FEAR THE TITANS! :-D

By the way - with the new limitation of 4 scanners per turret tops the gidrah AI shows its colors. The enemies will tip-toe straight through the weakest point in your defenses but that opens up new possibilities too - i.e. placing turrets just to create choke-points between their range circles and plastering these with mines. :-P
