What atmosphere do you find most fun for SMP?

This isn't really a vote for anything concrete, but I do want to get a general feel for what you guys want/like about SMP. Keep in mind that the next update is going to give us (buggy) health and (buggy) mobs.

The closeness of cities encourages interaction and cooperation and it allows you to hang out with friends

OR

get your ass blown off by creepers.

I'd prefer rivalry cities that literally go to war with each other.. :ugly:

So you want cities that are safe, unless there is a official attack by another city? I think I may add a new option for that.

While city wars sound like a nice idea I really doubt we will ever get (dedicated) enough people on at a time to pull it off.

i chose survival with safe cities, but safe only in terms of pvp, the outskirts should still be haunted by zombies!

i think "war" wouldn`t really work in smp, thanks to different timezones there are hours when (nearly) no one is online to defend his city. some guys with no rl would be able to wait out all other players to conquer their stuff.

in general i like the idea of wars, also because you craft your own gear and prepare for battle, feels like a medieval knight (combines with a blacksmith).

imagine an army of 20 players landing their boats at the enemy`s coast, rushing through raining arrows from the castlewalls just to blow up said walls and rape, burn and pillage everything that survived

Now a large gladiatorial arena would work better for PvP. Imagine holding team battles, siege battles, fights against mobs (assuming supops/trustees can spawn monsters) etc. And since its in an arena we don't really have to worry about needless grief.

Lim told me once, zones don't affect mobs, they just stop other players from griefing, so "No Zones" basically means: "PvP Griefing", but I voted for Safe Cities without Wars, no need for more "PvP Griefing", we can do it in an Arena like you guys say.

My vote is hardcore survival with voluntary PvP.

You could fight (with consent), but griefing any structures and out-right stealing from chests (unless it was made clear that pillaging chests was allowed) would be forbidden. Of course, whatever you're carrying is fair game.

I was under the impression that "wars" would be scheduled and agreed on by both parties because its enjoyable. Its like your coliseum battles, but in a city with bigger stakes. I like that concept.

I do not like people griefing cities. That's a very small amount of fun for the griefer and a lot of pain for the griefed.

Plus, I changed my vote to the safe city option; however I strongly believe we should create some arenas for such a thing.

For my part, here's a clarification of my stance:

YES:
Fighting
Losing items in inventory while fighting (victor not obligated to return inventory items
Allowing theft of items with consent of both parties before fight

NO:
Building destruction
City vs. City (though groups from cities can fight, there should be no "Let's all kill everyone in Sparadise/Aperture/Kaizoku/Tombstone/YourCityHere"
Repeated unprovoked attacks

MAYBE:
Toll roads?

To be honest all options apart from totally no zones and zoned cities make no sense from a technical standpoint until Notch fixes his shit and plugins catch up.

PvP and wars will be possible via some plugins, I guess, but all I have seen so far are in an early stage of development, so meh.

Well, I don't like counting one's chickens before they are hatched since SMP development, including plugins and mods, is absolutely unpredictable.
Does anybody remember the epic plans everybody was making for SMP before it was released and how disappointed we all were when that pile of shit finally came out? For all I know SMP won't resemble the single player experience for the next year or so...

Yes and no. It's not "come raid my warehouse" it's more of for when two groups fight: each group defends their base and attacks the other's. Should they get in, all the stuff that group owns is fair game, assuming that both groups are playing by those rules.

Ultimately, this would need some pretty heavy supervision, maybe even a thing on the forum in a locked thread with leaders from both parties agreeing, but if the supervision is there, it would make for some interesting fights.

Even though I don't play SMP:

City wars could be a really awesome thing- rather than each city attacking each other simultaneously, simply destroying stuff, the actual city could be "safe", while the people inside it were free game. That way, the cities wouldn't be destroyed, there would be enough people on to solve it, and you could still fight it. Of course, there could be people who simply logged off for a while during the war, or attacked using hands and avoided item loss. That way, it wouldn't be set in stone that you would lose items in it. And also- when people "died" they'd have to go to some kind of a re-spawn area jail, or not re-enter to avoid wars lasting forever and no side "winning".

The benefit here, is that it would give cities a real reason to exist- to fight each other, and develop some form of a "common wealth" amongst themselves, and then to gain members.

I already thought about how City Wars might work. A good idea would be to enable people to "reinforce" blocks (walls?) with something, perhaps a special block embedded every so-and-so block. And then the "defenders" would get a console notification when somebody tried breaching the wall with a rough "sector" indicator so they could come to its defense! ^^
