Well today we (3 lithuanians) met each other on freebuild server and were talking in lithuanian with each other (pms are not an option for 3 people also, so please do not offer that). So some of the admins (rank varies from veteran to supop) told us to stick with english since rules according to them only allows english in global chat. And another admins group (same from veterans to supops which is strange as well) said that this is english speaking server, but it does not enforece you to speak only in english. The discussion was constructive, people tried to give their arguments etc. but still it seemed to be opinions only and that should not be enough. Furthermore i typed to check these "rules" people were telling us to obey, so i wrote /rules in game. Well the result was only 1 rule no griefing. Then i checked wiki page http://minecraft.specialattack.net/Gene ... Freebuild) and i didint found no such language rule neither. So to make it clear once and for all, is there an unwritten rule of english only language and do we must to speak in english only in this servers global chat, or can we chat in our own language between native people?

It's not exactly a rule, I mean, if you don't follow it, you won't get banned. It's more of a guideline, please TRY to speak english, and yeah, if it's 2 people, use PMs. IRC is always a good option when talking to more than one person, and tinychat.com offers a great chatting chance that includes text, voice and video. Please use those if you want to speak a different language. But yeah, it IS an english speaking server.

Why not just speak in english? I understand its not your first language, but it's only language that everyone understands. If it's only relevant to you guys, Pete made a good point, go use a chatroom. Vederas I've talked about this with you sooo many times. If everyone resorted to their own language on the server, people just wont mingle with each other. So please, for the sake of being polite atleast, stick to english, like other people have to.

I'm starting to feel, that you're doing it as a sort of pride thing, like your trying to defy people who ask you not to use your national language. I've even had to mute you several times, which I just hate doing, 'cause it's not something I like muting for, but you can't just ignore us.

The rules recently come up in another topic:

New ones are being wrote up.
Speaking in other languages should be kept to a minimum, its fine when theres just a sentence every now and then but a full conversation can be done on skype/msn or alternately pm's. In failing to do so after politely being told not to, you will receive a mute.

We try to be as fair as we can but it becomes an absolute chore to moderate if people are speaking other languages. Pete is right we aren't going to ban for it, but with a player base of 65'000+ we need to define the common language.

Generally, the rule I follow is this:

Can an supop/trustee understand you? (I don't count myself, my language skills are horrible)
Do you chat less than every thirty seconds?

If the answer to both is yes, I let it slide. If not, I ask people to stop. It's not, in my opinion, kickable or bannable, but if you insist on talking in a way that only you and a friend can understand, rather than using /msg, xFire, Mumble (we host a server, Iunno if it's permissible to make your own channels just for your own language, but Minecraft has been permitted to make its own), or one of many other methods that won't spam out chat for others (not that everything said in a foreign language is useless, it just is for them).

still i see only opinions in here, and i created this topic to finally find out does that language rule exist or not. I am not that stupid to understand that only in english whole server will understand me, but the problem is that im not talking to whole server and i do not need to be understood neither by supops or regular players (if i need i can speak in english). And i would like to ask one question. Does some people speaking in their native language disturb anyhow rest of players in server? And if not why are you trying to ban more convienent way of communicating for us?

Ugh fine... then see this as a placeholder rule until the definitive rules roll out...

The global chat is for English language use only. If you want to talk into your native language use whispers (@name message) or an external program such as Mumble, IRC or TinyChat. Repeatable breaking this rule will result in a mute.

See how easy that was? Also if you want to hold extensive discussions an external program is actually more convenient since your then able to scroll back!
