The Game of the Hour is here! You've all been waiting for something else! Without further ado, I present:
Minecraft: Power Outage Edition

The board game that may leave you bored to tears! The best example of "I had this but then I didn't like it so I threw it out and used something more simple!"!

And, hopefully, a decent game to boot.

TA-DA!

If you are looking for the second draft, scroll down to the bottom of the page.

Note: Do not redistribute this outside the Special Attack forums. Only my site (prototypedesign.x10.mx) and this thread are allowed to distribute early drafts of Minecraft: Power Outage Edition.
EDIT: By the way, if anyone wants to volunteer to say, do typesetting or something, just PM me and I'll give you a copy of the .odt. I'd make it freely available, but it's not near final yet and I don't want ten million variants running around before I finish mine. Typesetting myself.

Get it here: http://bit.ly/mpoe2d

Actually, get it here: http://bit.ly/mpoe2da and get the standard deck for printing here: http://bit.ly/mpoesd

Well, it's written in OpenOffice, if that makes you feel better. All the diagrams and my personal logo are made in Inkscape. I'm big on FOSS.

EDIT: Oh yeah, I need feedback to fix stuff, and lots of ideas, especially for builds.
EDIT 2: The first person to say that it needs Redstone, Biomes, The Nether, and Railroads gets a boot up their tail, I'm working on it still!

If anyone has an iphone (or any other i-thingamajig) you can put it into your device using iBooks from the app store. Just in case you might want to read it while not being restricted to your computer. :4

Actually, it should be quite friendly to mobile reading (though you may have to adjust zoom settings), due to the simplicity of the current design. Transferring it to a Kindle via a cable in this format should (should, key point) allow you to read it on the go.

EDIT: I have noticed that there are several (very many several) dead ends in the Resource section. This is not intentional, but comes from having done the entire Builds section in about an hour, and not necessarily making anything other than Builds with those materials.

Dead ends that I am aware of: Clay/Brick, Saplings, Gravel, Sandstone-ish, since it's a stone stand in but I didn't explicitly (enough) state its compatibility, all the Blocks (though they can be transformed back to their lesser forms, meaning it's not a "dead end", but has no use. This is because I had a "Prestige Build" system in my head that I decided was too obtuse to include as a standard rule)

The term exploitation may carry two distinct meanings:
The act of using something for any purpose. In this case, exploit is a synonym for use.
The act of using something in an unjust or cruel manner. It is this meaning of exploitation which is discussed below.

I think you mean exploration on page 5 ;)

Also the wood card has rock written instead of wood :)

I'm prolly gonna change the rules a bit to make it more like a rpg type game when we try it with a couple of my friends.

I've read half of it, I might read the rest, but I don't think I'll be playing it. However it sounds really good, I hope it catches on

I know it's a power outage thing, but I'm sure spread sheets, using MS Excel, or Access, or anything to a similiar effect would help keep alot of things less fiddly. An optional feature?

Actually, in its original form I was basing it off of the d6 system, then I decided to scratch that and make it a more simple, traditional board game. That's the reason it was called exploitation, because at one point both discovering and removing the resources required a roll, and exploration didn't really have the choice I meant. However, with the new format, it's definitely gonna change. Thanks for pointing it out!

Oh, and if you find rules that work well for rpg-type play, tell me what they are! Open D6 seemed good, then I got cold feet, then I used d6+skill value, then I scrapped skills altogether for a more simple game (figuring that I could make an RPG later). Plus, as I may have said here, I'm also beginning conceptualization on a project I call 1-800-RGM-CHNG (1-800-Regime Change), the Fun Game of Anarchy And Revolution (subtitle pending... change), which will be based off of either an entirely homebrew d100 system or a modified Open D6 ruleset (or a homebrew d8 based system) with a revamped character system (and without the icky magic stuff).

Planitia, the problem with Creative Commons is that I'm using Notch's IP. Ultimately, I mean, I could make it not-Minecraft, and just rename it, but I'd still have to change it before I'm 100% sure. Plus, why 3.0-by-nc-nd? I'd probably just use 3.0-by-nc-sa.

The RPG-ish system I had relied on a four-skill system, Exploitation, Building, Crafting, and Combat, and the idea was that you'd get 10 points to split, giving a 2x3 and 2x2 "average" character or a more unbalanced character, encouraging cooperation, but I scrapped Building and Crafting, in favor of just working on Thresholds, then decided that was not very balanced (if you didn't start with Building and Crafting, you couldn't make "Prestige Builds" to increase your skills without a ton of luck/work), so it went down to just Exploitation and Combat, then I decided that I may as well just cut the whole damn system out if it was just gonna be two things.

Oh yeah, and the Prestige Build system would allow increasing skills. When the Prestige Builds component (I'm thinking of releasing separate documents for massive rule additions) is released, I want to have a working RPG system for it, or else some way to make it count without skills as well. I don't want M:POE to be winnable.

Well, I hadn't really thought of it. The rules for mob spawning are unclear. If a phase is uninhabited at the end of the turn (and has no builds to prevent spawning), there's a mobs and creatures will spawn. Since you have to fight mobs (except for spiders during the Day) when you enter layers, I didn't think about what would happen during building. I'd say yes, if it becomes dusk/night and there's a spider, you have to fight the mob. However, you can work through the night in safety if there's no mob there.

Lol, Pete.

I had the methods for Redstone and Railroads done, but since I don't have anything to trigger yet (except TNT, but I'd have to write that in), it's not really useful, and railroads are... the same, only for people instead of a trigger.

I scanned over this thing, and I'm amazed the amount of time that went into it. Maybe one day if I get bored I'll try to turn it into a MUD
(I wonder if I could get extra credit in my programming for n00bs (CS 1304) class?)

Bloody, actually, it took about two weeks of sporadic writing. It helped that I'd been wanting to do something similar for a while, so for a lot of it the only effort involved was transferring it to the page.

After weeks of blatant advertising on your part, it's amazing how I only just realised why it's called "power outage"

Umm... okay. Just for future clarification, it's called Power Outage Edition because you can play it during a power outage.

Quantities of items would make the game different and i'd like it more, but it makes the game less simple.

How so? You mean like having items produced in quantities? Yeah, I contemplated doing that, but again, simplicity won. It's assumed you have about a stack of every resource, with the exception of ores, coal, diamonds, and their product, and items are a 1-shot thing. Hence it costs no wood to make tools (though you must have wood).

Well, I didn't think it was that good. That said, I wanna get better typesetting (Anyone? Anyone?), and hopefully some more content and supplemental material on my site prior to a more widespread release.

I've got a second draft preview I want done. Cards are not yet done, I'm working on the background for these pages. Look at page 6 for awesome (5 if going by the numbering system Scribus does for me!). This also counts as the second draft, though it's not in a final state.

EDIT: Yes, it did just get *smaller* with graphics added. Your jaw drops as much as mine. There are two reasons for this: I changed from OOO to Scribus, and also that I cut off all the card indexes (though I still have 'em, and they (*have* been changed)). Also, the text seems to be locked somehow (I'm not sure if it's *rasterized* or just locked).

EDIT 2: This is like draft 1.4, draft 1.5 now has the svg *centered*.

EDIT3: Ignore everything else. This is now the rules-only 2nd Draft Release

EDIT4: Now with actual release! Dammit, it was up once.
