Kinda hopeless, but improving (119)

If you like horror games, where you don't blast every monster into giblets, you should definitely check this one out.

I really enjoyed the Penumbra series (which was the first game series from Frictional games), and because the amnesia is going to be alike Penumbras, I cant wait until this is released :D

DEMO: http://store.steampowered.com/app/57300/

Quote:
Amnesia: The Dark Descent, a first person survival horror. A game about immersion, discovery and living through a nightmare. An experience that will chill you to the core.
You stumble through the narrow corridors as the distant cry is heard.

It is getting closer.

Explore...

Amnesia: The Dark Descent puts you in the shoes of Daniel as he wakes up in a desolate castle, barely remembering anything about his past. Exploring the eerie pathways, you must also take part of Daniel's troubled memories. The horror does not only come from the outside, but from the inside as well. A disturbing odyssey into the dark corners of the human mind awaits.

A sound of dragging feet? Or is your mind playing tricks on you?

Experience...

By using a fully physically simulated world, cutting edge 3D graphics and a dynamic sound system, the game pulls no punches when trying to immerse you. Once the game starts, you will be in control from the beginning to the end. There are no cut-scenes or time-jumps, whatever happens will happen to you first hand.

Something emerges out of the darkness. It's approaching. Fast.

Survive...

Amnesia: The Dark Descent throws you headfirst into a dangerous world where danger can lurk behind every corner. Your only means of defense are hiding, running or using your wits.

Do you have what it takes to survive?

It seemed interesting at first, never having played it, but then I watched a full gameplay video in Youtube. It wasn't scary, more like Super Mario in dark. So I haven't acquired the game. Blah, you will likely yell me to a hole, but that's just my opinion. It was comedical, though.

I watched a full playthrough with commentary as well but I really think it's much scarier if you play it yourself in the dark with speakers.
Of course now you've watched it already you'll know what's going to happen. Suspense, silence and atmosphere to me is much scarier than just in your face 'blaargh! I'm a monster! I'mma cut you up!' action.
Horror, but mostly terror is all about the suspense and the atmosphere. The scariest parts are the parts where nothing happens, but you know something's going to happen.
It pains me that most recent games and movies try to scare us by simply using gore and seat jumping scary images. Nothing but cheap thrills and instant gratification.

I played this one some time ago, wasn't as scary as the majority claim it to be..I still think Silent Hill hold the king's seat when it comes to the fear factor (due to it's pure randomness and unpredictability) <3

I have this game and it's really scary when you play it by yourself.

But imo SH2 is the scariest game ever made, then again that's probably because I was a lot younger when I played it the first time.

I was really looking forward to this game for a very long time. As a fan of the original Penumbra trilogy and as a fan of horror titles in general, this was looking to be an epic game. Unfortunately playing it shattered any illusions under which I was labouring.

I just don't understand what on earth the devs did with this, but their entire design ethos is WAY off the mark. The entire purpose of horror games is to build tension and unnerve you, twisting that which is normal so that it becomes unrecognisable and horrifying. Silent Hill got this so well it is painful. Silent Hill 2 is just a master-work, carefully toying with the player like a cat with a mouse before tearing the rug from beneath them completely. Silent Hill 3 I also believe to be an epic horror game, but as it was telling a specific story some of its impact was maybe a little diluted, at least when comparing it to the previous game.

In Penumbra the devs seemed to have a decent grasp of how the devices of horror work, though they were far less accomplished than the Silent games, but in Amnesia they have just gone off the rails totally. Amnesia tries to be a horror game by simply telling the player they should be scared. Instead of working to build atmosphere and lore, all they do is make the screen go wonky whenever your avatar wanders too far from the light or catches sight of one of the (hideously badly drawn/animated) "monsters". Its just a farce. You cannot instil fear into the player of a game by telling them that their avatar is afraid: that just makes no sense. Moreover that fact that the avatar in this game is a blithering coward who is terrified of being in a gloomy room on his own just makes the entire affair seem silly.

Really very, very disappointed by this game end to end.

jeez the monsters do look crap! i mean, the ones in penumbra didn't look great, but fuck was I terrified of them! The key to real horror is definitely pacing, and building up the natural fear we have, which i got from playing penumbra ten fold! :S

Dead Space is a great example of how devs do horror wrong (and im speaking from experience here as my company made the disastrous Shellshock 2, [a horror vietnam game] which had to force the players head to look at the "scary" bits, you weren't allowed to look for yourself and discover the horror on your own.) Dead Space though, not a bad game, made the horror really obvious and predictable, the creatures were almost goofy, the only saving grace was the sound. Sound is key in horror games (or even, the lack of sound :| ). The Silent Hill games did this well too.

Yeah even Dead Space was closer to being a horror game than Amnesia. To side track for a moment, did anyone else think that DS1 was far better than DS2? The graphics and the artistry in the first DS (on PC this is ofc) were, I thought, simply fantastic. The opening 40 minutes or so of DS1 were just beautiful: I felt like I was wandering through a film. The characters (their faces and their animation) were great and the design of the ship was really very pleasing too. DS2 on the other hand could have been any old, generic, off-brown, corridor based console shooter. Most odd...

;) you have no idea mate, you only had to play the finished product
Now imagine playing that game with broken mechanics, numerous bugs, and a crap frame rate... oh wait :S, well... imagine playing it every day on 3 platforms for many many months ^^ lol! we almost all killed ourselves. In QA we all wrote a document how to improve it, it was ignored ^^. One guy in our team was able to finish the game in like 3 hours, and did so everyday, poor guy, he looked so fucked before he left.

LOL. Man, you need to find a better studio to work for. Rebellion are just useless.

Set up the franchise with 1 or 2 good games, flog off shit, unfinished, uninspired sequels forever after.

Standard form for the industry now.

This wasn't the case for shellshock, both games were wank in the eye.

I've not played any of the mentioned games but playing F.E.A.R was brilliant. Especially at the end where you were in a corridor full of... corridors and you'd turn around and ARGH THERE'S A GODDAMN GHOST SHOOT IT SHOOT IT...

Jeez, I've never screamed so much at my monitor. Doesn't help playing at night, headphones on and lights out!

I have a soft spot a mile wide for FEAR. While it was (rightfully) panned for relying on jump-out shock tactics (like every "horror" film of the last 10 years, I would point out) but I honestly enjoyed the plot - kind of the anti-Akira I always thought.
While the jump-out bits were cheesy, the fact that it was Alma (a child) was, I found, actually fairly effective. I also love the endgame, leaving the facility, chasing Alma - good stuff.

McMoist - Never got the Resident Evil games, well not after they went 3D. The hype that went along with 4 totally passed me by (I bought it on the Cube at the time and hated it) and 5 did pretty much the same. Reading a press release by the game's designers sealed the deal for me when they announced that yes, they did deliberately hobble the control mechanism for the game (RE5 that is) because the inability to move and fire or side-side step "added tension and excitement" to the game. If you have to hamstring your player in order to "add tension" to your game, you don't deserve to be allowed to make games as far as I am concerned.

Jeez in fear 2, there were some bits with alma that just freaked the piss out of me, like she would just be walking slowly towards you, stop, then be on the ceiling, or in a different doorway, just bink into different places.
