64bit Windows is the better version of windows :P also its probably because Minecraft doesnt work well with laptops :( try turning all settings down and giving Java more memory (google it)

Make sure you have both the 32bit and 64bit versions of Java installed. Also since its a laptop the video card is probably pulling its memory from the laptop's main pool (aka Shared Memory). You'll want to go into your bios and increase that if its set low. Windows 7 needs 32mb just to run its desktop because of Aero.
edit: Nevermind, I should of read the spec sheet before rambling all of that.

No. This is wrong. Categorically make sure you ONLY have the 4 bit version of Java and then use the MCPatcher to change the amount of ram that is allocated to Java. Also make sure drivers are up to date, the VSync is disabled for everything and that your memory usage doesn't go weird (you7 should have at least 4 gig or give up now)

64-bit Windows operating systems (which may be Windows 7, Vista or XP) come with a 32-bit Internet Explorer (IE) browser as the standard (default) for viewing web pages. These operating systems also include a 64-bit Internet Explorer browser, however using it is optional and it must be explicitly selected to view web pages. Note that because some web content may not work properly in a 64-bit browser, we recommend using the default 32-bit browser and downloading 32-bit Java.

Well, your first error is using IE at all then, isn't it?

And your presumption is yours. I don't use IE. When it comes to Windows, IE, Firefox, Opera, Chrome; they're all 32bit.

No its not. None of those you listed are sensible browsers with the exception of Chrome. I run Chrome and I only have java 64 installed and it works perfectly.

How about you learn your subjects before you argue, eh?

They're just jealous or brainwashed by the Goa'ulds. Firefox is the best browser, there's no way around it. Chrome is almost as bad as Safari.

Firefox, and Chrome are both great browsers, and it's all down to preference, no one's stupid for using one or the other.

A is more reliable than B, X is faster than Y

Chrome is not only obviously faster and more secure, all official reviews agree with this. Firefox was a great browser, but now it is a hideous piece of bloatware that crawls along and is riddled with holes and security issues.

Chrome is the only sensible choice, but then most PC users don't make sensible choices. Look at how many of them still use XP.

For general use, I don't see why. I could use all the programs I need for my work on my families xp if I ever needed to, that includes all versions of Maya, probably all the games I play, it's not connected to the router, but sure it would do fine on the internet too, that's all I really ask of a computer. I mean this laptop just came with Win 7, which is better yeah, but if I had to pay for it or something, it'd just be a waste of money for what I use it for.

If it's not broken don't fix it, and that's why schools, and offices are still using it, why fork out for liscensing, and the costly process of implementing an OS when the current one's doing the job to satisfactory?

You convince me, at the price of how user friendly I personally found the xp, for the things I need a computer to do, what benefits am I reaping here?

I have pretty much the same view as Junco - I've been using XP for years now, and a lot of people I know prefer XP to Vista/W7. I'm getting along fine with XP, why switch? Nothing anyone has ever said about Vista or Windows 7 has made me say "well man I should def. get that, it's way better than XP!"

If Howard can't even big up Windows 7 over xp for what you need it for, then I'd stick with xp Gamma, I can say you're not missing out on much

"Big up"? Good lord.

I can tell you in painful and precise detail why you are a moron and I am right (simpler way of putting it flatly) but I really do not have the time to waste on such endeavours.

Use what the fuck you like - I could not care less. Just keep your infectious idiocy off the forum. Stupid spreads fast enough on its own with out your help.

End of discussion. I tire of listening to the vacuous rattle of empty vessels.

"big up" an annoying phrase, because it's far too easy to poke fun at you Howard

I would have thought you'd jump at the chance to convince me that Windows 7 is not just an upgrade, but an absolute nessesity, infact I was genuinely hoping you would.

No really, Howard, if all you're going to say is "Windows 7 is so much better than XP and everyone who doesn't switch is an idiot," everyone will just think you don't have any good reasons that XP or Firefox or IE is bad.

I really am curious why you vehemently bash XP/Firefox/etc. without saying what is wrong with them.
