Well not anymore, after reading what sniper was saying in game about how there needs to be a minecraft mod that allows version switching, i thourght, thats a fairly good idea. Now the only problem with developing a mod for it is that with the new update the mod will be broken... However i have found a way around this!!
After about an hour of messing around with a batch file i have finally got a working answer. The batch file becomes the way you will start minecraft everytime. Rather than clicking on Minecraft.exe just use the Minecraft.bat file.
NEW VERSION INSTRUCTIONS...
If you have used version 1.0 if the switcher: 1st IGNORE WHAT VERSION THE PROGRAM SAYS YOUR RUNNING ON THE FIRST RUN, type U when prompted to update. This will put the 1.9 jar file in you bin and then set the current version of MC to 1.7.3. 2nd Run the switcher 2.0 again and press Y/N which ever you desire and you are done!!
If you havn't used v1.0 and this is your first time running the switcher: 1st Run the program 1 time and it should start minecraft. Update to 1.8.X and then close Minecraft. 2nd Run the switcher again and it will ask you "Switch version?" type "U" and press enter. 3rd run the switcher 2.0 a third time and you can switch between 1.9 and 1.7
To change back to 1.7.3, close minecraft and run the Minecraft.bat again. You will be told the current version of minecraft your running and then be prompted if you want to change versions, Typing "N" will just run the current version but typing "y" will switch the version allowing you to join the much loved 1.7.3 SPA server.
If there is any problems, there is a log.txt file that will contain a log of what the program was doing.
Read the "readme" file for step by step instructions.
***This will not make your saves Compatible with 1.7.3 once you update, this is purely to switch back so you can still access servers
UPDATE!! The new version is here, allowing you to quickly use the 1.9 prerelease and what not.
Basically use the version switcher 1.0 to set minecraft to 1.7.3, then run the new program and type "U" in the prompt. this will update it so u will have 1.9 in there to switch between. then run the switcher program 2.0 again and your home free
No working version is available at the moment...
