I run linux on my home server (Ubuntu Server 7.04) and as an alternative os on my desktop pc and laptop (both running Ubuntu 8.04 at the moment). I've had it installed for quite some time now, so I'm quite familiar with it. Ask me and I'll see what I can do.

What distro have you installed? And what desktop environment? I belive you can render fonts in a cleartype kind of way if you have gnome, which is the standard desktop environment in ubuntu.

I haven't used KDE an awful lot, but I do know that it comes with a very nice control panel. Have you looked through it? I'm sure you can turn on anti-aliasing for fonts somewhere in there. :)
