tbh, i didn't play diablo 2 either, i gave it a try several times but every time i was pissed about the graphics, it just looks horrible

but i played titan quest and the addon (completed it about 4 or 5 times) and therefore i'm looking forward to this "real-life-killing" piece of software

From what I've seen in the footage it looks worth playing, but it does seem plausible to get bored because of the possible repetitiveness.

Diablo was back there a really great hit. Played it a lot in our good old 10Base2 network. It was a really new thing. You cannot understand its fascination from a "modern" view on games. D2 is based on this effect.

Edit: http://eu.blizzard.com/wwi08/streams.xml <-- Some nice live streams

The Necromancer (4970)
I'm looking at it with a cooler mind. It shows all signs of an overproduced, overhyped, uninnovative product everybody will buy anyway because, hell, it's Blizzard and it's Diablo! I call it the "World of Warcraft Syndrome" which isn't to say that WoW is bad - it's good, probably the most polished and accessible MMORPG of them all, but that doesn't mean that there aren't better and more innovative titles around.

I mean - listen to the annoying music that tries SO HARD to sound epic. Also, it seems that the skills, environmental interactions etc. got more complicated yet again and the lack of "purity" in its hack&slash-ness is what made me not play Diablo 2 to the extent I was playing Diablo 1...

Nevertheless we'll have to wait for the final game - I really dislike hyping or dissing games (which, I believe, I just did - just to counter the enthusiasm) before getting to play them especially since, being a video game journalist and all, I see them long before they are released on some occasions and thus am even more annoyed by all the speculative crap many people are saying about them. ;-)

I think you pretty much nailed it by using the past tense and referring to "back then". Will it still be as exciting 50 Diablo-clones later? Does everybody always want only more of the same?

Basically the way I feel about Diablo 3 after having seen the gameplay videos is pretty much the same as my feelings towards StarCraft 2, which seems to stick maniacally to the "old ways" so as to not upset fanboys but at the same time not innovate too much. I'm a guy who prefers fresh but flawed (of course in the best case scenario they shouldn't have flaws =) titles to the unoriginal but polished ones...

P.S. I've been using my nickname ever since Diablo 1 - Lim-Dul, the level 48 Sorcerer (AFAIR it was pretty much impossible to get to level 50 without cheating in Diablo)... I still might have a character dump on one of my old HDDs. ^^

I am definately going to buy Diablo III. I never played Diablo I or II, but a year ago I saw two of my mates play it. The game itself wasn't really me, but it looked funas hell in coorporative mode!

Therefore, I will buy Diablo III just to have some fun with my mates, especially when because Diablo III runs over Battlenet!

Blizzard and Valve are imho the 2 best game developers there are. I've owned every game those 2 comanies produced since Lost Vikings.
Though they both produce great games, they are very different.
Valve was alyways an innovator. Every game they made was groundbreaking in some part. They listen to their community and expand their portfolio through acquiring some of the community content.
Blizzard on the other hand has never innovated a single thing. This might sound harsh, but think about it and you will realise it's true. All they did was to take a concept and refine the gameplay really well, so that it simply is more fun to play compared to other games at that time. Blizzard didn't have a single game that had a top-end graphics engine. All their games looked outdated on the release day. But that doesn't matter, because it's not the graphics that determine how much fun you are gonna have with a game. Blizzard is very conservativ regarding updates. Of course they listen to the community too, but all they do is refine and balance the games.

Blizzard has always been this way, and when I first heard that they will continue on this path I was reliefed. They know how to do this. And they will produce more great games this way. Imho it is a really good thing that both Starcraft 2 and Diablo 3 will stick to their roots. I completely trust Blizzard to make the right decissions for their games.

:-D

By the way - you've spoken true about Valve and Blizzard but that's precisely why I have deeper respect for the former than the latter.
I also value Valve for being so open to the indie community and young talented people with fresh ideas. I mean - that's why we have CS, DoD, TF(C & 2), Portal, Audiosurf and quality MODs by the dozen. =)

i have to admit that i'm hyped about diablo 3!!

It might not be innovative (btw. blizzard might not have invented the hack-n-slay action rpg but with diablo it sure set standards and defined the genre!) but it'll be as great as these (lets just call em) "action rpgs" can be. to me, there wasn't a game in this "genre" that came close to diablo/diablo2. The only other game i enjoyed was Titan Quest and there wasn't anything new to it. I (and many other people who enjoyed diablo/diablo2) want more of the same! some additions that have been anounced are welcome but i don't really want it to be innovative... i want it to be gr8! :D
