Yesterday I experienced a problem with my monitor going black foor a sec or two and then the screen returned.

It's a new monitor.
Monitor "power-light" remain on, so It's not a power problem
Cable between monitor and comp was checked and replaced. Didn't work
Restarting DID work.

All the above points to that it is NOT a monitor problem.

Graphics Drivers are up to date.
Motherboard is NOT up to date, however it is a pretty new motherboard, that noone else has experienced any problems with.

Programmes running at the time were:
PowerDVD
MSN
Steam (updating TF2)
Adobe InDesign

I really do want to pinpoint the problem, since I don't like knowing that the computer might spasm out for no reason.


Can anyone help?

Hasn'y happened before, and I can say for sure that it's not a power problem!

To check my understanding of problem: screen went black for a couple of seconds and then it returned to same state as it was before - i.e. windows/game on screen as before etc.

In the past I've had screens drop picture simply cause one of the cables wasn't seated properly, and something as simple as moving the table caused it to "lose connection" for a second. Power one did it with a nice scrrr noise as you can imagine. In addition monitor power light doesn't necessarily drop immediately - mine stay lit even though power is off for a few seconds - guess there is a capacitor in there or some sorts.

If it's a software/bios problem then I don't know.

ps forgot to add that my second monitor also has a second pc attached to it - and it auto searches for the analogue or digital input and flicks between them if a signal drops.

i guess it's a driver problem, try the beta drivers

Does the monitor show 'no imput' when it was black? It should normally do that if there is no signal imput from the PC.

Have you tried to slap your monitor? Simple raw violence often helps...

As you mentioned PowerDVD... was a DVD running?

Do you have an NVIDIA card, Spike? If the answer is yes then it sounds like a typical driver crash to me. It happens quite often with certain driver versions (in my case at least)...

The screen went black, no warnings. Therefore I doubt it is a connection problem, since my monitor usually change "power-light" colour from blue to orange if it's a signal problem (which it didn't).

It's an ATI card, I upgraded to the latest version of Catalyst a week ago. I didn't experience any problems except for yesterday.

A DVD WAS running for the first few flickers. I stopped the movie to make some dinner, and as the DVD was stopped, the screen still flickered (Once every 3 minutes or so)

8.8 got released today. You might want to upgrade again just in case. Also i'd advice to keep an eye on your GPU temps.

Hmm... perhaps it was a conflict to the display controller generated by the DVD... DVDs can sometimes generate weird things on PCs...

switch monitors, does the problem remain?
how does the same monitor react on a diff computer?
how does the same computer react to a different monitor?

- What kind of PSU do you have next to what hardware?
- Do you have your monitor and computer grounded with a propper ground wire?
- did you try a different cable? and what cable is it? normal vga or dvi?
- don't buy nvidia anyhow

I'll wait for answers.
