Heads up, science fiends and night owls: The greatest science experiment ever built is set to switch on at around 3:30 A.M. Eastern Time tomorrow.

After 14 years and $8 billion, the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) plans to inject the first beam of protons fully around the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the circular particle accelerator 17 miles (27 kilometers) long straddling the Franco-Swiss border near Geneva.

It will most assuredly not destroy the world.

What it will do is help researchers answer some big questions about the universe—why particles have mass; what dark matter may be made of, and why matter survived its brush with antimatter when the universe was young.

The LHC will accomplish all that by producing high-energy particle collisions—600 million per second—for detectors to scan for rare but telling debris. (See our special report, The Large Hadron Collider: Countdown.)

CERN estimates that in six to eight weeks it will steer the first proton beam into a head-on crash with a second beam circulating the other direction, for a combined energy of 10 trillion electron volts (TeV) per collision. The lab plans to shut down the accelerator for the winter in mid-November and prepare it to restart next year at its full energy of 14 TeV.

Scientists by now are sick of reiterating that they would not have built such a machine if they had the slightest fear that it would produce microscopic black holes capable of destroying the world. Nor do they appreciate the death threats.

http://www.cern.ch/lhc-first-beam

personally hope it all goes well not just for the sake of the planet but so much will be become answered with this experiment.. Questions like why is 50% + of the Universe just missing :)
Im excited...

Been talking about it in school all day. Have wondered why there were no post here :)

Anyway tbh i'm going to have troubles sleeping tonight.. I know it's gonna turn out well, because.. well, they must know what they're doing with their 8 billion dollars. Just something else than buying fancy sandwiches i hope.

they know what they are doing that is for sure :)

But they dont know what the outcome will be :) thats the only worrying part ive been following the LHC for many years America already has one and its been fine.. but this is by far the biggest and will produce results than any other before....

and its going to write a whole new book in partical physics :)

In fact the reason why I spent my childhood in Germany is because my father worked at DESY - Deutsches Elektronen Synchrotron - another, smaller, circular accelerator. I'm a sucker for such things ever since then. ^^
However, linear accelerators are superior to circular ones anyway since there's no loss of energy resulting from bending the particles' path...

An upcoming experiment I'm far more excited about is ITER:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ITER

Also, I'm annoyed by some clueless politicians and eco-activists who oppose the project while being completely delusional both about the technology itself and about renewable energy sources (fusion reactors would not be renewable but would offer close to a limitless supply of power by today's standards =) and unfamiliar with the concept of diminishing returns they are usually connected to...

Due to a huge interest for this live video feed of the LHC First Beam day, you may not be able to see the live video stream and we apologise for this.
Please try reloading the page, come back later, or check the other connection options available on this page.
Many thanks for your interest in CERN and the LHC!

Yeah, the dark-matter experiment. CERN have this huge x-billion pound reactor and aren't they also trying to produce it (dark matter) nearly a mile down in abandoned Welsh mine in a cavern that they have sterilised with minimum equipment.

Guys, armageddon is not for another month.

Today they launched protons in one direction. In four months, they will launch protons in the other direction, and not until then will they collide (obviously :P)
