The Necromancer (4970)

Yo!
As I announced a while ago I'm taking a break from TF2 but am playing another MOD from time to time now - I wonder if someone is interested to join for a game or two.
It's by no means a replacement for TF2 or something SpA should look into since the whole thing is quite unpolished (even for a free MOD - e.g. the characters run as if they swallowed a broomstick) and full of bugs but it is quite nice as a western-themed distraction (and that's basically the only good western MOD except for some HL1 or Q2/3 stuff that never got popular).

I know that the introduction sounds a bit off-putting, so let me discuss the good sides instead:

The shooting in the MOD, while not THAT realistic, tries to emulate the western feeling by making all the weapons quite powerful but very inaccurate, slow shooting and with long reload times on top of that.
There are several gameplay modes (including a sucky deathmatch) but the most common ones are a variation of the capture the flag/king of the hill theme.
Depending on the map you will see one or several chests (or bags) containing loot that you have to pick up - once you do that you have to keep the loot-carrier alive until the loot timer runs out and after that your team's victory meter increases by a certain amount (the goal is to get a total of $5000 worth of loot). Easy enough.

The nice thing (or very, very bad thing if you end up in a moronic team) is that you are ONLY awarded points for objective-based actions - picking up loot, protecting the carrier, shooting the enemy carrier or his guards etc. This concept is taken to the extreme - you literally get NO points for killing anybody if he didn't have loot or wasn't guarding it and so forth. What's also nice is that protecting or capturing loot gives you "notoriety", which is the in-game currency for buying better equipment like dual-revolvers, upgrades, ammo and even different hats. ^^

The downside of the system is, like I said, the risk of stumbling into a team full of morons, since then you will not only be losing but losing badly - your team won't be getting loot and this will mean worse equipment etc. HOWEVER there's even a handicap system in place if your team is only a bit behind the enemy - there's a built-in autobalance AND the losing team gets more points for the loot it picks up (if it manages to secure it, of course) which makes for dynamic rounds which very rarely are one-sided.

Gameplay tips:

Please note that it takes time to master the weapons - in the beginning you will be under the impression that all headshots are purely luck-based or that it's impossible to hit the enemy. That's not true - you simply have to understand that the weapons get MADLY inaccurate if you start shooting to fast or moving - nowadays I have an accuracy of 50-60% with revolvers but when you start you'll most likely end up in the 20-30% or perhaps 40% range.

If you want some tips as to the equipment choices:

Rifles are accurate BUT reload and shoot slowly. Another thing is that you are usually very far from the loot when using them so don't expect to gather many points with only sniping people - that's a mistake many newbies are making.

The bow is quite deadly when mastered, even more so with explosive arrows, but I simply don't like it.

Many people like throwing around dynamite - I don't like this either - you will end up killing your teammates sooner or later and more often than not you get shot (by me :-D) before getting into a good throwing position.

Revolvers are my favorite and most thematic weapon - they deal enough damage, shoot fairly fast, have 6 bullets each and can be surprisingly accurate if you learn how to master them (even though they received a damage fall-off penalty recently).

My favorite equipment progression is:

Initial Notoriety (25):
Colt Navy (15)
Spurs (10) - allow you to sprint and reload and sprint while holding the loot - since you will find yourself reloading quite often this is a MUST-HAVE imho - they also help with getting away with the loot

Once I hit 30:
Colt Peacemaker (30) - a GODLY gun - two shots to kill a guy, one if it's a headshot - in EVERY aspect better than the Colt Navy - don't bother with dual Navies
Once you get 33 notoriety buy some ammo. =)

Once I hit 40:
Colt Peacemaker
Spurs (of course)
Ammo (at 43)

Once I hit 50:
Colt Peacemaker
Spurs
Chewing Tobacco - this makes you regenerate stamina faster - I find that this plus spurs amounts to almost the same thing as boots (which give you +10% speed) since you're able to sprint longer and more often and even when carrying loot
Ammo (at 53)

Once I hit 60:
Dual Peacemakers - now we're talking - if you master the dual Peacemakers you will be a FoF god (like me ;-) - it's not uncommon for me to wipe out half of the enemy team with a surprise rush, dual Peacemakers blazing - just remember not to fire TOO quickly lest your guns become highly inaccurate

60+ - repeat the whole spur/tobacco business - in the beginning you'll rarely hit 80+ range and 100+ is a very good game (with lots of teamwork on both sides - usually a 2:1 win in rounds) in my book any day. You can get creative after that. Many upgrades depend on your playing style - e.g. lots of people prefer Pain Tolerance (+25 hp) over mobility, Long Beard gives you HP regeneration but if you play this game properly you'll be dying very often anyway so I don't see the usefulness of this, Alternate Clothes make you open loot chests and deliver loot faster, Whiskey can heal your team mates (for additional points!), Boots increase your speed etc. (the hats do nothing :-P)

Nope - I'm completely uninterested in this game. :-D
Also, I don't need betas, I have review/preview versions. :-D

Yeah, exactly. However, it's currently the only playable western mod for HL2. I'd have expected more games of this kind so many years after the HL2 release but well...

Tried this a while back, the weapons are indeed hard to use and there wasn't all that many players when I tried it. :?

Well - nowadays AT LEAST one server is full 24/7 so it got better. From what I read FoF is trying to get Valve support like other MODs and considering that they recently made a move onto the Orange Box Engine all by themselves (a thing many MOD teams seem to be reluctant to do - e.g. the arrogant devs of the otherwise awesome Dystopia MOD) I can see that happening.

Yeah - that game was epic. In fact I played it again with some mods a year ago or so and it has aged pretty well because of the good story, high quality cutscenes and retro-gameplay.

Hmm, maybe not Illiterate (20)

I tried this game a week or two ago, it really is quite a fun mod, if it was a bit more polished I could see it being with the steam featured mods, like Synergy and Insurgeny.
