I've stuck my old ram (after assertaining it's probably not the ram causing my computer faults) in with my new ram, both running in 5-5-5-18 timings

so 4gb gone up to 8gb, why has my windows index rating stayed the same, 5.1? For RAM?

Yes yes i'm on 64 bit vista :p

taking my computer into the shop on tuesday

edit: http://forum.specialattack.net/viewtopi ... =45&t=4860 <-- why is go to shop :) :)

Eeeeehm - taking your computer to the shop because of the stupid VISTA SYSTEM RATING? 0_o

Ignore the system rating - it has some limits set by default and what counts as well (if not primarily) is both the speed and the timings on the RAM, so it's no wonder that the rating stayed the same.

Don't worry about it - just enjoy your new RAM if it works.

P.S. I'd be careful with combining different RAM dice in your system - I have a lot of overclocking experience and was convinced more than once that the three primary latencies and the frequency aren't everything. There are even variations between different batches of the same RAM model from the same manufacturer! E.g. recently my system became highly unstable because my Write to Precharge Delay (not one of the basic parameters) was off by just 1 ns!

I'd recommend you run this little tool and see if any errors pop up - if they do, then I wouldn't use the additional 4 GBs of RAM, which are mostly unnecessary anyway (unless you fire up like a zillion programs).

The Vista rating rates the number of writing accesses on your Ram. The size doesn't matter at all.
I tried 8GB too but it was just wasted money for gaming so I sent it back. 85% Ram usage with Vista64 on TF2 with 4gb, 35% usage with 8gb.

you replied in it!

that's why i'm taking my computer to the shop. Errors only pop up in memtest in probe/bios -all mode, standard runs fine. Same errors with both sticks of RAM.

Since installing the extra 4gb i've seen an increase in performance in Empire: Total war, so, worth it :) I just want to know why the steam rating stays so low when it's doubled? Is it the timings? etc etc.

It seems my computer will forever be a mystery.. ooOOOOOoooo *waves hands*

I wrote the same thing *cry*.

But wait - you have new RAM by now, correct? Sooo... The problems are fixed or do you still have them? You said "both sticks" - you have 2x4GB sticks?

Problem still there, the ERRORS are still in memtest so i'm eliminated RAM as the sole cause, doubling my RAM (since i had the old sticks, i shoved them in and it's working fine) hasn't effected stability, i haven't had a restart since i've installed it actually, maybe it's fixed it ;)

Having errors with both sticks of RAM from 2 excellent companies is leading me to believe that i'm not just unlucky, that it's caused by something more serious like my motherboard, or cabling.. or something else stupid...

Wouldn't suprise me tbh, really wouldn't, it'd annoy me but i'd be relieved :)

Oh i'm sorry for neglecting you a care bear hug :P

have a... *pink care bear hug*

it's 4 x 2gb, 2 kingston 2 corsair. lol. Same timings though. so A ok? lol, works anyway. Empire total war seems to appreciate it with 2400 troops on the screen. :):)
