they broke copyright laws? I think not.

they did however download things for personal use, and that was, as far as I know what they got convicted for....

They were found guilty of helping users to commit copyright violations, yes.

Full sentence here (pdf).

I only browsed through it briefly, and failed to find any mentioning of "downloading for personal use". I can't be arsed to reach for my glasses though, might be there. :ugly:

It's actually a whole lot more than an interesting case, it's american post-imperialism. As an active member of the swedish pirate-party (political group), I'm saddened to see how the copyrightlobby gets their dirty fucking fingers in places they shouldn't be. Srsly, how much cash do you think the actual musicians will get hold of, stemming from this lawsuit? Not a fucking dime, or less.

Actually the Piratpartiet has won the seat, and it has no affiliation with The Pirate Bay at all.
It was actually members from Piratbyrån (a NGO, not a political party) that founded The Pirate Bay.

But nevertheless, I would have voted for Piratpartiet if it were possible. Hopefully they'll allow us to vote for any European party in any European country in the future. It just doesn't make sense that I'm restricted to those parties that are registered at my principal residence.
