Has no REAL life! (1120)
I need to do something about my total shit FPS. Asking around on IRC did no good since everyone claimed that "tf2 is like that", yet I see how everyone else is getting like over 9000 fps.
Yesterday I heard someone complain because he was only getting 200 FPS. What the hell.

Anyway, is 40 FPS really sensible for these specs? What components may I need to replace?

kthx

Dude wut? Even a freezer should have enough power to display TF2 on a decent FPS. A simple gfx board is cheap as hell.

graphics card is you first port of call here

I've got an nvidia 8800gt 512mb and have TF2 at solid 60fps (where it's capped). that particular card is a bit outdated now (it's no longer being sold at the usual hardware places I check) but you can get the same or something even better for pretty cheap nowadays.
I'm not too up to date about the newer stuff, but my guess is that you'll get something for around £75 that'll run tf2 on max everything, easily

it might also be worth swapping your amd dual core for a newer intel one, but that would mean replacing the motherboard too and it would be a pretty expensive job for something I wouldn't say would make that much of a difference

while you're at it, get your RAM up to 4gb, cos it's ridiculously cheap nowadays :p

I'm running TF2 on my good old ATI X1900 XT (512 MB RAM) on an E8400 with 2 GB RAM... and IIRC I'm running on 1600x1200 and pretty high details. It looks fine for me... never have measured the FPS (What's the command for that?) and according to Computerbase.de your card is around 1/3 of speed compared to mine.

If you wanna get something cheap, look for one of theses cards with the best price-fps-rate:

ATi Radeon HD 4830 - 80 €
Nvidia GeForce 9800 GT - 85 €

Cheaper:
ATi Radeon HD 3870 - 65 €

If you wanna spend some more to get a decent card for the next games:

ATi Radeon HD 4850 - 115 €
Nvidia GeForce GTX 260 - 140 €
ATi Radeon HD 4870 1GB - 150 €

Here is an overview: http://www.computerbase.de/artikel/hard ... erhaeltnis for price-fps-ratio (performance rating

It's in German, but I think you'll get the funky colored graphs (Preistabelle = prices in Euro, Preis/Leistung = price / fps). ;)

Comparing your card to newer cards:
ATi Radeon HD 3870 is 7 times faster
Nvidia GeForce 9800 GT is 8,4 times faster
ATi Radeon HD 4870 1GB is 12 times faster

:4

Your gpu is shite (I got a similar :ugly: )
Either buy a new one, or if you cba, get m0re's fps config (its the best out there), cause your game is way too beautiful right now

http://more.pp.fi/tf2/configs/index.htm

That will most likely give you a considerably good fps boost (I suggest tweaking it a bit though, eg delete the netsettings and make your own, dont delete your config like its stated in the instruction, clear the exec commands at the bottom of the cfg, and adjust some cvars if you dont want it to be as ugly - eg

mat_specular 1 to keep shiny ubers (but a black intel on ctf-maps)
r_lod -1 and
r_rootlod 0 to keep face animations of the players
r_eyes 1 and
r_teeth 1 to not make them look like freaks :ugly: )

And Lim, if youre reading this: Pls dont bother telling me I shouldnt use the config of someone else, I checked the config and tweaked it to my preferences ;P

OH and:

If you see this guy again, tell him he's an idiot since 1. Neither can his eyes "see" such high fps and 2. Nor can his montior display such high fps (unless he's got one of this ultra-modern plasma screens with 200Hz refresh rate - and I doubt he has)

Or it was a typo and he wanted to say 20 - then its ok :P

Aye. 40fps is good for a low end system like yours with this graphic settings. And 200FPS? Who cares. For smooth gameplay you only need very solid 25-30fps. Your eyes wont see any difference. Allthough I recommend matching your FPS with your refresh rate. On LCDs thats usually 60.

Erm... I doubt that. You can clearly see a difference between 30 and 60fps. Its way less choppy with higher fps. Only your monitor refresh rate will cap it (if youre @ 60 Hz, you wont see a difference between 60 and 75fps. However, if youre @ 75Hz, you can again clearly see a difference between 60 and 75fps).

Well thats a very subjective manner. Biologically your eyes don't see stuttering at 25fps. I dont see stuttering at 25fps =) If you still feel a difference in higher levels thats okay but for me the 25fps is the "magical mark". On the other hand I get sick very quickly if the fps drow below 20.

Its more to do with turning I thought, turning at 25-30 fps for me makes the game seem quite stuttery and while playing scout/sniper it is much harder to track players (probably to do with the monitor at 60Hz and the game at 30hz?). I don't notice the difference when it's changing from 50-60 though.

Thanks for all the replies, guys.

I will have a look at that config, as well as possible GPU replacements.

EDIT: On a second note, I will probably have to live with the low fps until I stop being a cheapskate. I want my tf2 to have some decency.

The Necromancer (4970)
Vögelchen - you're not entirely right about FPS and such. In fact in games 25 FPS is quite choppy - in-game FPS are not the same as the frames shown to you e.g. in cinemas. I recall several huge discussions about this issue in the past and initially I was on your side, until somebody linked to this article (or a similar one):

http://www.100fps.com/how_many_frames_c ... ns_see.htm

Ah - I see that there's something about that on Wikipedia as well:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frame_rate

Aaand some more links:

http://amo.net/NT/02-21-01FPS.html
http://amo.net/nt/05-24-01FPS.html

And a summary of these:

http://whisper.ausgamers.com/wiki/index ... ye_can_see

Even more:

http://www.tweakguides.com/Graphics_5.html

Download the program called "FPS Compare" to see the difference. You can also nicely see how displaying more FPS than your monitor's refresh rate can lead to tearing. I found the choppiness to visible best when you switch modes (M).

Yup, that last link explain my point better than I could, in TF2 there is so much stuff flying round the screen that a low fps makes the changes 'look' less smooth. Also the part about control lag is the exact thing with scout and sniper making you notice the lower fps rather than actually seeing it.

Trying to run vista very well on a system like that is taunting the devil even more. You'd be getting some better performance under XP out of it.

The Necromancer (4970)
Bucky - stop the bullcrap, it's getting boring. He has 2 GB RAM which is enough and the main bottleneck for Vista is memory. Considering he also has a GF 8xxx series card I predict that Vista is actually FASTER for games than XP would be. It's the same story as the myth that Win2K is better than WinXP if you have a mid-range PC - for very old PCs that might be true but for PCs that meet the system requirements (and m3n's PC does so with a large margin) XP is faster than Win2K - the same is true for Vista.

Dekar, don't change your GPU. With this GPU you are able to see through gates, barrels and boxes, with better you won't see anything :ugly:

It's the reason I dont play sniper. :ugly:

Yeah, looking through certain crates is not that bad, unless you want to take some shots from afar and dont know if you can actually hit them.

Or when you forget there are boxes and empty 2 clips of *insert favorite weapon here* before remembering.
