Downloaded it and tried alien and predator and got rather owned, partially because I didn't check up the controls until afterward :P
I'm no fan of games that got weapons lying around on the map ready to pick up, it reminds me too much of quake and whatnot. Granted, it was death match, so what to expect? Would be nice to be able to set up your initial loadout when you've unlocked the weapons if that's how the xp thingie works. Or I'll just stay out of the death matches and put my money on that the other game modes are a bit more refined. Further testing required though, I'm up for some games this evening if anyone's interested then.

Yeah the demo doesnt do the game much justice at all, much prefer the SP mode.

The marine SP campaign in AvP2 was truly awesome, the fear is almost tangible. God I love that stuff.
But while a good SP game is nice once in a while the longevity of a game is, according to me at least, defined
by it's multiplayer modes, since I do not find entertainment in grinding through the same storyline over and over again.
Problem is to be able to try it out before I buy it, but I suppose I have to wait for some decent reviews and gameplay videos before I can make an informed decision.

Ignoring all the issue with graphics, interface andcontrols, this game is still dead to me as it has been designed for talentless, 360 owning children. They have focussed a huge amount of time making the three species balanced so that they can play deathmatch while using a joypad. This is so staggeringly counter-intuitive and ignorant of good gaming design that I could spit! The entire point is that the spcies are NOT balanced, but that they all have strengths and weaknesses. If a pred gets close to you, you are toast, same as if you stand out in the open waiting to get sniped. Aliens are supposed to be incredibly strong and agile with deadly close comabt attacks but relatively weak and very vulnerable to the fire from marines or the preds.

All Rebellion has done here is make this "game" child-friendly. Remove any pretence at skill (focus jumping - I simply cannot stop laughing at that! :ugly: "Can't be bothered to even walk to your target in a game now? Never fear! We are here to remove any pretence at user interaction with our new gameplay mechanic...") and then remove any hope of having a PC multi-player audience by employing one of those god awful, fucktard "match making" schemes.

No matter how many of the obvious and glaring bugs are fixed, no matter how much better looking this thing is in DX10 and no matter how in-depth, well designed and beautifully realised the single-player content is, this game is still utterly worthless. I cannot and will not support the console-isation of yet another IP, especially by a developer that I used to have a lot of respect for.

Howard, I find myself intrigued to ask what games you actually play and enjoy,
since you seem to disagree with what seems as the most of us here. Or it could be
your ability to voice your opinion that has given me this impression :P
No offense meant, I respect your opinion and I'm a bit sad to discover that I agree
with you regarding the consolification (not just this game, but in general).
But I'm truly interested to know what kind of games has made you rise the bar to such a height :)

the other mp game modes are alot more fun, team deathmatch is great cause you can get a squad of marines together, or double team targets with two aliens. Infestation mode is very tense and pred hunt does make u extremely paranoid.

i respect howard alot and his opinions, and i agree with most of what he has to say. :)

No worries, used to that response 8)

I am very verbose with my opinoins: trying to be a writer after all :D

As to what I play? I play most things on PC (don't own either current-gen consoles), but that is a vague answer. Lemme list what I have installed currently:
  • -AVP Classic (AVP2 was utter crap. Sorry, but its true. Get this to see when the franchise was still great)
-Beyond Good and Evil (but I still can't get it to work correctly!)
-Braid (very good design - cute game)
-The Chronicles of Riddick: Dark Athena (not a great game but the first one, Butcher Bay, is amazing - one of my favourite games)
-Defence Grid: The Awakening (Flawed but awesome tower defence game which I used to own most of the world records for...)
-Evil Genius ( I *will* play this - I *will*)
-GTAIV (still trying to give this a day in court - Liked San Andreas a lot (until the end) but the performance in this game is laughable)
-Half Life Source (HL was a top game - it now looks better but the gameplay no longer holds up - cheap though!)
-Indigo Prophecy (Still playing this - not certain about it yet)
-Lost Planet (Highly underrated game. MP was for shit I grant, but the SP is just great fun - ROBOTS!!)
-Max Payne 1&2 (Played back in the day and were recently cheap on Steam - good if repetitive fun to be had and the 2nd one has a great story)
-Medieval Total War II (used to like RTS/Strategy - no longer have patience - Will likely never play this :( )
-Psychonauts (Funky platformer - lot of time for this as there are so few on PC - Yet to complete it as being distracted by writing atm)
-STALKER: SOC (What to say? Classic game - a must for all FPS fans)
-SWJK: Jedi Academy (Never played this back in the day but played all the others and liked them. This has not aged well however - will beat it shortly)
    -TF2 (... :D )
-Unreal Tournament (Still one of the greatest MP games ever made and father of most of the other MP games out today. Dated GFX but still an utter blast to play - Always up for this)
-UT3 (not quite as good as the first one but still pretty damned solid - also a big fan of the engine)
-Avatar The Game (Surprisingly solid this. Good (if stylised) GFX, dodgy flight controls and a daffy plot but as an experience it is worth while. Took about 6 hours to beat the Na'vi campaign and it was all pretty damned enjoyable - shocking for a movie tie-in I know!)
-Burnout Paradise (Huge Burnout fan. Have all the originals on PS2 and still play them now. This one is good, but the open-world adds nothing - also too many bugs and laggy internet play kept it from being great - still a blast though)
-Tension (Hmmm... don't know about this one. Don't know at all. I need to give it a really good day in court to be able to judge but that will have to wait)
-Divinity II - Ego Draconis (RPG is another genre that has fallen off my radar - this looks pretty as hell and has a fun plot but the levelling system is HARSH - again needs more time but is looking promising)
-The Saboteur (For a shonky 360 port this holds up well. Unfortunately there is a mouse lag bug they have not fixed yet so I can't get into the tougher levels. Worth a look eventually)
-Prototype (installed this after being lambasted in Mumble for not liking it. There is a lot of good here and its a very fun game but the GFX lack and I still say the controls are a bit patchy - worth a punt though)
-Thief - Deadly Shadows (Great game - Just reinstalled it a while ago on a whim - much fun)
-Fallout 3 (Controversially this has probably been my favourite game of the past few years - I really have very little criticism for it and have played it through at least 5 times now - Superb)
-Mass Effect (I never played this! I don't know why, I really meant to, it just never happened - Have started now and am enjoying it so far but am barely into it yet)
-Quake 3 (Just put this back on for giggles. Not aged gracefully but still one of the best shooters out there)
Anyway, to summarise: I like games. I like MANY games. The problem is I think that the industry is getting lazy and tired and the current level of quality in most titles is extremely low.

I didn't expect such an extensive reply, but I do not complain :p
I've played a few of the titles you listed, and heard about the majority of them, all good stuff, and a few that I've never heard
anything about.
Butcher bay was truly an awesome game in it's own. Add to that my love for stealth and bad ass cliche characters that Riddick is, and the awesomeness is doubled :D
Mass Effect is a very good game, and the worth to play through in order to enjoy the second title even more, even though I think ME2 is better than the first anyway.
FO3 was another good game I enjoyed. Only played it once though :p
STALKER: SOC crashes my comp for some reason, would like to play it though; love post-apocalyptic settings.
Oh, and Max Payne was awesome, good storytelling there, and action.
Avatar the game seems surprisingly good, might try it out sometime.

You're taste for games are deemed tasty, and the value of your opinions are truly asserted :)

The writer thing: Yes. Well, I have just, much to my own surprise, finished my first novel and have just (today) finished trolling through the first printed draft for stupid errors. That done I need to tweak various bits of it (and write another 3 chapters: small ones mind) and then I am handing it off to 3 very kind people who have agreed to look it through for me and give me some feedback.

After that...I don't know. I will be delving blindfold into the world of publishing houses. We shall see how this plays...

for those put off by the matchmaking issues (full release allows dedicated servers) i heard today that a patch for the demo is on its way to hopefully sort the match making. no idea why they didnt beta test this.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is the only good game that's ever been made.

They should have just stopped making games there and then, cause frankly, everything since has been a massive disappointment.

Honestly, the whole industry should just have turned around and said;

'Yeah... We're never gonna top that. Time we just stopped making games. We'll become Cobblers or something'

But no, they continued on regardless, cause they're greedy bastards. And my video gaming life has been one massive let down after another ever since. Not to mention, I can't find a decent pair of bloody shoes, cause they're all off making Mass Effect 2 and what have you!

What gave you that impression?

EDIT: Oh, you thought that Sonic 2 bit was a piss take?

Nah, that's not the case mate. I was just having a laugh, and it certainly wasn't at your expense.

EDIT EDIT: I don't care about progress.

I have never enjoyed a game more than Sonic 2. :ugly:

im not a big fan of using the 360 as your target for design, surely the harder platform requires them most thought, which upset me about a few things in wm2.
