So i thought i would post here rather than the Minecraft general which is where i turtle.

Anyway, Almost 2 years ago i used Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid Ibex (I think) for about 3 months. I was able to do so much on there and at the same time so little.

Gaming was a no go zone due to not only wine being crap but also my hardware was VERY crap (The details require another entire thread and discussion)

Now that i have discovered developments in Wine and more developments in programs being made available for Linux i am considering my return to Linux. Also i have experienced a painful 2 years from not having access to Terminal. M$DOS dosen't do it for me. Also many hardware items i used didn't have Linux support (none of which i use now).

I don't game as much anymore due to work/study and now steam works through wine flawlessly so that is a huge plus.

ATM i m about 60% going to linux 40% staying with M$.

I will go over when i reach 80%. START!

PS. I will go back to Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meercat. So don't recommend any other systems.

The new Ubuntu is really pretty, even the installation is!!!

Now, Linux is an excellent operating system, but in order for it to do what you want it to do, you have to have patience, soft cuddly clothes(for those awesome long nights of sitting in front of the computer, pulling hair ^^), and basic knowledge of things(which you can get from Google).

With regards to wine... My friend and I spent 7 hours yesterday configuring wine to optimally work with my desktop. Wine works very well, but only of you spend the time to make it work XD. After it fully worked, we were able to play all games on High settings with BETTER framerates than in windows .

If you have the patience to use Linux, I'd reccomend it XD. But SOOO many people get WAYYYY to frusterated and quit!

As i said before. I used it for 3 months and had it running REALLY well.

Wine was a pain most of the time and i didn't use it. But i know most of the commands/setting on linux so im highly considering moving.

And thatks for reminding me it was Debian XD i forgot which one it was.

Yup, well its apt-get but yeahhh, just remember to have root permissions when you run it by saying sudo before it! XD

I never had to use sudo cause i logged into root when i logged in. I had my own account but in terminal i logged into and use it as ROOT instead of my account. That way i didn't have to use sudo every time or enter a password every time.

If you're not a Linux expert go with Linux Mint instead of vanilla Ubuntu. Mint is Ubuntu-based with 100% repo compatibility but doesn't care about Ubuntu's lofty "open source only" ideals and comes with all proprietary codecs, drivers and whatnot pre-installed, so it runs perfectly fine out-of-the-box in most cases and requires only minimal initial setup.

is mint pretty much updated every time ubuntu updates to the next version?

I installed the ubuntu 10.04 LTR on my hp but i always had issues with proprietary drivers and the difficulty of installing such simple things. I know I wont have this problem if I go with building a desktop for my next purchase but should I roll with mint anyway instead of ubuntu? What does ubuntu have that mint doesnt? Are there any disadvantages to using mint as opposed to ubuntu?

edit: PlanPlan, in my opinion, you should always dual-boot Windows. That's just my opinion. Start using linux again. It'll make you smarter, but always keep Windows handy. You never know when you'll need it.

I'm NOT dualbooting. I don't see the point. i can use linux standalone just fine.

And im gonna get 2tb for now.

@Capi - there are absolutely zero disadvantages to using Mint. Mint has EVERYTHING Ubuntu has and much more - it also has its own set of tools making certain things easier. Every single solution you'll find for Ubuntu will work for Mint too and they use the same software repositories too.

The only reason someone would want to use Ubuntu over Mint is if they really wanted full control over what's installed on their system initially of if they were one of these "Open Source or die" dickheads whom I hate. If you're insistent you can even configure Mint to "revert" it to Ubuntu, which is why I don't understand Planitia's comment about "shitcunts". If Mint is for shitcunts then Ubuntu is for retards who think that making things more difficult in the name of useless lofty ideals makes them somehow better than others. And hey, Ubuntu was a major step in making a truly user-friendly Linux already - but only ONE step, other distros that take it even further and insist on being much more compatible with Windows (from the UI to the software compatibility layers) out of the box are the way to go.
Because there are SOOO many games on Linux, AMIRITE? And most open source alternatives to proprietary programs are "alternatives" only in their authors' minds.

Any game i will want to play can be run on Linux with very little problems. I don't like booting a different OS just to play games. If it doesn't work/isn't supported for Linux then i wont play it.

I'm not an opensource or die dickhead i just like the full control. I have no problem with commercial software. I just have a problem with insane software that doesn't provide free versions for educational use. If i bought all of the software i use i would have less money than i do now which is 3cents. I actually personally prefer open office over M$office not because it's free but because it's simply better.

Linux Mint is a good idea for Linux beginners too. I started with Kubuntu and then realised i hated KDE.

Anyway the reason i prefer Ubuntu over mint is because i like to install things as i need them. If i goto open a file and it wont work it's a line in terminal to get it going. I don;t like using a computer with software set up already. Like when you buy a computer from... A department store and it has Norton and 500 other shitty pieces of software you will never use.

@limbo, my mommas laptop was actually having some gma 9xx issues on windows 7 today, so i installed mint on a whim after XP failed me with a hal.dll error and i remembered this thread.

I can vouch for what your saying. Installed so minty fresh, the absense of broadcomm wireless nonsense was refreshing :3 and im noticing cooler, better, and more stable performance than i have ever seen out of this poor thing. It actually plays games and kept me entertained for a while, and it looks fantastic by default.

As for PlanPlans; if you think its a good idea to have 4 terabytes of space, main linux, and not save a partition for windows 7 and some diagnostic tools, then youre an absolute retard... and that came from a girl, so you might wanna actually check yourself on that. mkay? ;j

I'll have windows 7 somewhere. Just not connected to the computer. I have several other computers and i'll have it on a HDD anyway.

Reading this thread makes me want to install linux again.

You asked for honest, objective opinion of others whether you should keep windows or not. You're not basically against windows (why else would you insist on 80% positive arguments for linux to switch again?) yet you insult the people that favor it.
