So, tell me something 'Mincecrafters' what's wrong with tunnelling? Why is it griefing?

it's destroying the lanscape from below, privating ppl from a vital space they need to make basements or underground constructions

Can't you just fill in what was destroyed?

It provides other griefers with covered means of transportation so that they can go from one build to another unnoticed. They're more inclined to use tunnels other people made than make their own, why.... no one knows.

This has been a rule since before I joined the server the first time. I always thought it was because of tunnels' tendency to damage other builds they come across, plus the fact that it leaves ugly spammy holes at the entrances.

And because they are wasting a server slot by deleting blocks instead of building.

It is what Hafnium said. It has a tendancy to go through other players underground builds/overground builds when they come up. It isn't always a concious form of griefing, when new players might tear through a build underground and not know what to do. But there have been some applications like Aleries said.

Tunneling is forbidden because

1. It wastes server resources on a player who isn't being constructive.
2. We have antfarm for that.
3. It's often linked to other forms of grief, though it's been a while since I've seen swastikas at the ends of tunnels.
4. It tends to run into builds, and the low intellect that comes with being satisfied with tunneling in an environment which is usually entirely one block (burn) leads to too little brainpower to breathe and do repairs at the same time.
5. We're just sensitive about our manhood. :x

Another thing, is that it isn't quantifiable. You can't say 'this tunnel is a build' about it- its just a random tunnel going through the ground. Now, lets say I'm making some form of basement, or whatnot, and I dig down, and hit a tunnel. I could have hit a different build, and it would be bad to overlap onto it. If I were a new to the server, I'd be rather confused.

If you really want to know, it doesn't hurt to make an account and play on the server...

If you have a house, and some one tunnels underneath it, do the physics kick in and the house collapses?

No, physics in MineCraft Classic is disabled, and even if it wasn't, it would only apply to fluids (water, lava) and sand - any structure built with other blocks would just float. Same goes for MineCraft Beta.

So if you deleted all the black under a house, the house would just float?

Yes, balls, that's how we can build floating towers and such out of gravel and sand, as well as making water lifts.

There is "ActiveLava" and "activewater", but that spreads like a motherfucker and the only help for that is a rather large supply of sponges or a lot of digging teams when a whole load of the stuff appears in our faces.

Also, doesn't tunneling make people lag, what with the map having to render it or w/e it's called, as well as just making random potholes in the soil?

Physics means math, and we all know what Notch is like with ANYTHING logical. I mean, wouldn't it be LOGICAL to be able to hold a stable minecraft.net when you have millions to spare?

Physics <3 and it's even more <3 when the sexy Professor Brian Cox talks about it :ugly:

So....
How far can you go underground then? Is there a limit?

Don't you find it hard to differentiate if someone is starting a basement build or a tunnel? I guess you start them out in a similar way.

You can tunnel 64 blocks down, until you hit the unbreakable bedrock.
A typical Griefers tunnel:
A typical basement:
Upon finding someone who is ''random tunneling'' the player gets frozen & asked to stop random tunneling; at this point, we would ask them to return to spawn or teleport them out. 90% of the time, the player is random tunneling & not making a Basement, however for the small minority who are making the basement, we take no actions. (understandably)
So, to summerise my answer to your question, its a pretty straight forward procedure in finding out whether the player is random tunneling or not.

I see your point about tunnelling. It doesn't look very sexy. The basement looks good, are there any ghosts?

i've been wondering about this rule too; and as i'm sure that whether it should be in or not is a subject that has been debated endlessly among the community, so i'll hide the details as to why i think it's a stupid rule to have (though i recognise the reasons you have for it being implemented are, in their own way, vaild). in the meantime, the policy is in place and i'm confident that you guys know what you're doing, so we should still enforce it anyway

You made some interesting points scatter, and I do think its something to be considered.. I think, the rule was originally put in place for people who were tunneling underneath peoples houses, into their homes which then becomes part of griefing. The problem is, if we allow people to tunnel under the map, I can see excuses such as ''It was an accident, I didn't know it was there'' becoming regular incidents. I'm sure theres more to it than that but theres my 2 cents.

Well, the Vietcong were into tunnelling too, and then the Americans came along and stuck their bloody oar in.

It's a countermeasure to make sure they don't come and occupy the Minecraft servers.
