Oh c'mon - Steam really isn't that bad nowadays. It has its quirks but if you do some maintenance from time to time and keep your computer in an overall good shape you won't have problems with it.
I mean - my Steam installation survived 4 OS changes - Win2K to WinXP, back to Win2K and then up to Vista - of course I did an installation OVER the old files to fix registry references etc. but all in all my profile survived unscathed.
The newer generation of Steam users is really spoiled - you should have seen the Steam1 or even the Steam2 beta - you had to not only reinstall Steam but re-download EVERY single game like twice a week because the whole system was so messed up. =)
lol, i only started using steam when they made us use it for servers. My old pc couldn't handle it and i had so many problems with it, i had to quid DoD for a while. aaaah! Good days.. yeah..
